Summary The adrenal gland of hypophy-sectomized Sprague-Dawley rat showed substantial atrophy 9 days after operation. Histologically-detectable changes in lipid distribution were observed in the zonae glomerulosa, fasciculata and reticularis following hypophysectomy, and a redistribution of lipid in all 3 zones was effected with α-ACTH. In addition, a synergism between α-ACTH and pituitary growth hormone (somatotropin) was demonstrated, the magnitude of the effect being conditioned by level of exogenous α-ACTH. These results indicate that somatotropin operates synergistically with ACTH when the 2 hormones are administered in combination to the hypophysectomized rat.

Abstract Preparations of follicle-stimulating hormone from sheep pituitary glands have been examined by means of zone electrophoresis on starch. It was found that the activity was not associated with the main protein component, and that the active component as well as the contaminating components had an isoelectric point at pH 4.6. Approximately a tenfold purification could be achieved by the electrophoretic procedure.

Summary Hydrocortisone administered at daily levels above 0.25 mg for 15 days consistently induced calcification of the myocardium in adolescent female mice. The male was less affected than the female and the concurrent administration of testosterone to the female alleviated the condition; ovariectomy afforded no protection to the heart. Both hydrocortisone and ACTH were quite ineffective in inducing the deposition of calcium in the heart of the hypophysectomized mouse. Moreover, the administration of growth hormone with hydrocortisone or ACTH aggravated this condition. Lactogenic hormone, DOCA and estradiol had no effect.
