Neuroleadership: The Backdrop

Argang Ghadiri; Andreas Habermacher; Theo Peters

This chapter aims to answer the simple question of what neuroleadership is. In addition we need to understand where it ties into current economic theory, if at all, and where it ties into the field of business and management theory, if at all. We will therefore outline what the current and developing “neuro” fields are, where they overlap, and where they tie together. We also propose a new term to create consistency within the fields of research. This will be followed by an historical overview of man’s concept of man—the being that economic and business theory is based upon. This will lead us to the stage we are at today in defining neuroleadership and also that of defining the concept of man according to the brain.

Four Basic Human Needs at the Heart of Neuroscience

Argang Ghadiri; Andreas Habermacher; Theo Peters

The brain is a complex organ and the variations in human behaviour are also a seemingly endless sea of subtle differences. This poses many challenges in trying to find clearer answers to human behaviour in any context but also specifically in the context of business administration. This chapter therefore aims to go to the basis of human behaviour. We draw on the work of Klaus Grawe to highlight how neuroscience has combined with psychotherapy and psychology to understand what the very neural substrates are at the basis of human behaviour. This chapter takes us through what we can see as the neuroscientifically founded basic needs of human beings and how this will subsequently influence each of our motivational behaviours and hence our way of interacting with the world around us.

Neuroscience for Business

Argang Ghadiri; Andreas Habermacher; Theo Peters

The brain and the neurosciences may be an unexplored field for many readers and so we aim in this chapter to jump into some of the specifics of the brain: to understand how it develops, how it functions and what this means for us. We will start with a very brief history of neuroscience before moving into the brain and its formation and functioning. We will then throw a spotlight on the technology that is driving the research before moving in to some specifics of brain functions that have a key impact on business and how we operate.

Neuroscience in Business: Key Protagonists

Argang Ghadiri; Andreas Habermacher; Theo Peters

The term “neuroleadership” is not new and neither is the idea of the brain driving human behaviour, interactions, personality and business interactions. This chapter therefore aims to summarise and outline some of the approaches that have been put forward over the years. We have chosen a number of protagonists who have specifically focused on the brain in business. We have not dealt with other names in the field, scientists and authors alike, that have focused on the brain in more general contexts as our purpose is to focus on the brain in specific business administration contexts.

Organisational and Personnel Development Tools in the Neuroscience Spotlight

Argang Ghadiri; Andreas Habermacher; Theo Peters

In this chapter we will look into specific instruments and theories from organisational and personnel development and leadership concepts and look at these through the spectacles of neuroscience and the four basic needs. This will enable us to evaluate these current approaches from a neuroscientific view and therefore to highlight their effects on personnel and the environment from a viewpoint of the brain and the four basic needs.
