Sin embargo, esnecesario verificar la funcionalidad del apoyo familiar en esos contextos.DESCRIPTORES: anciano de 80 o mas anos; demencia; salud de la familia; apoyo social; vulnerabilidad socialIn order to guide the development of dementia-related public policies for the elderly, it is important to identify factors that vary together with the social vulnerability of this population. This study aimed to identify the relationship between the São Paulo Social Vulnerability Index (IPVS) and various indicators of family support for elderly people over 80 years of age, who presented cognitive alterations (N=49). All ethical guidelines were followed. Data were collected at the homes of the elderly people. A large majority of the respondents lived with family members (88%). In half of the cases, the respondents lived with one (41%) or two (9%) other elderly persons. On average, there was one more non-elderly person living in the high vulnerability family context (M = 3.6, sd = 1.70) than in contexts of very low vulnerability (M = 2.4, sd = 1.07), F(2.43) = 3.364, p < 0.05. However, the functionality of the support provided by these family members needs to be verified, in each of these contexts.

The objectives of this study were to characterize the caregivers of elderly individuals with cognitive impairment living in different contexts of social vulnerability, and assess the family functionality of the elderly as perceived by the caregivers. Family functionality was evaluated using the Family APGAR instrument, assessed during home interviews with 72 caretakers. All the ethical aspects were observed. Spearmans correlation and the Mann-Whitney test were used, with 5% significance level (p<0.05). Results show that 82% of caregivers reported a good family functionality, 14% reported moderate family dysfunction, and 4% reported high family dysfunction. A statistically significant correlation was found between Family APGAR and the number of people living in the house (p=0.048). Further studies could verify the relationship between family functionality and the caretakers overload in the context of elderly persons with dementia.

Functionality of elderly people with cognitive impairments in different contexts of social vulnerability

Ariene Angelini dos Santos; Sofia Cristina Iost Pavarini

Objectives: To evaluate the functionality of older people with cognitive impairments, living in different contexts of social vulnerability and correlate with the variables of age and gender. Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive study that included the evaluation performed in 88 patients, using the Katz Index and the Pfeffer Functional Activities Questionnaire . The Mann-Whitney and Spearman correlation, with significance level of 5% (p <“0.05) were used. Results: There was no influence of gender on the results of evaluating the functionality of the elderly. It was found that the older the elderly were, the more dependent they were, both for instrumental and basic activities. It was found that most elderly living in poor environments were dependent for activities outside the home. Conclusion: These data reinforce the importance of evaluating the functional capacity of the elderly, especially those with cognitive impairment, advanced age and living in contexts of poverty.

To compare the occurrence of sleep complaints among senior citizens resident in the local communities of two municipalities with differing Human Development Indices (HDIs): Campinas, State of São Paulo (IDH = 0.852) and Parnaíba, State of Piauí (IDH = 0.674). METHOD Descriptive study as part of the multicentric project going by the name of Frailty among Brazilian Senior Citizens (Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros--FIBRA). A total of 988 senior citizens were analysed, making use of a social and demographic questionnaire about sleep problems (Nottingham Health Profile); questions about naps (Minnesota Leisure Activity Questionnaire). The Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney tests were used in the analysis of the data, at a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). RESULTS The chronologically advantaged individuals in Parnaíba showed a higher incidence of sleep complaints when compared to the senior citizens of Campinas. There was a significant association between municipality and the following variables: number of sleep complaints, non-restoring sleep, precocious awakening, difficulty in falling and staying asleep. CONCLUSION The nursing staff must intervene in favour of the promotion of health with actions that either reduce or prevent these sleep-related problems.
