Submarine communication systems have evolved from direct detection to coherent transmission systems that have shifted the complexity from optical to digital processing. Indeed, coherent transmission uses powerful DSP algorithms that process digitally CD compensation, DGD mitigation and Polarization de-multiplexing. It opens the way to soft decision FEC solutions that enhance the performance near to Shannon‘s limit and thus extend the reach up to points of presence mostly inland. Current SLTE brings new kind of nodes in the cable landing station with the benefit of very compact, low consumption and reliable solutions thanks to route protection in the terrestrial extension. This has come also with innovative features such as pulse shaping, high order modulation scheme and grid-less architectures. In addition, correlation OTDR offers an embedded solution to the SLTE allowing fiber fault localization within 12000km submarine line network. These new techniques provide SLTE with extreme capacity, flexibility and connectivity

Dynamics and performance of hybrid distributed Bragg reflector lasers including a chirped fiber grating

In this work, we report the spectral and modulation characteristics, as well as bit-error-rate performances of stabilized hybrid distributed Bragg reflector lasers including a chirped fiber grating. An original analysis of such lasers based on a modified second order rate equation will also be presented to explain the observed stability behavior.
