Excerpt The etiology and pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis are not known. Many studies have described the clinical and pathological characteristics of the disease process. Numerous additional st...

Abstract A patient with idiopathic dilatation of the ascending aorta and a ruptured true aneurysm of the mitral valve is presented. The histologic appearance of the valve as well as the course of clinical events suggests that the lesion of the mitral valve may be a consequence of a basic defect in connective tissue.

Abstract Five patients with respiratory insufficiency secondary to muscular weakness developed oxygen pneumonitis. During treatment with pressure-cycled ventilators attached to endotracheal tubes (...

Subtotal killing of human peripheral blood lymphocytes responsive to PHA leaves a residual population which will respond ten times as vigorously to Con A as to PHA. By contrast, after subtotal killing of Con A-responsive cells, there is no relative enhancement of the response to PHA. This is interpreted as being suggestive of two populations of human peripheral blood lymphocytes: one responsive to either PHA or Con A, and the other principally responsive to Con A alone.

Rabbit antibody to chromatographically separated 7S gamma globulin proved to be a potent anti‐gamma globulin reagent, capable of potentiating the serologic activity of blood group antibodies of the 7S gamma globulin class without dependence on complement.

Excerpt Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an antibody toalteredimmunoglobulin G (IgG), but its role in pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been established, nor has the nature or origin of an...

The physicochemical characteristics of the Good antibody were studied further. The antibody consisted of two molecular types, one associated with IgG globulin, and the other probably associated with IgM globulin. The two types differed in complement binding capacity and in sulfhydryl sensitivity. Both were “complete” agglutinins reacting best at 4 C. The IgG antibody was not potentiated by antiglobulin serum. The physicochemical and serologic characteristics of the antibody placentally transferred to the Good‐negative infant born in 1966 resembled those of the IgG antibody.
