John M. Streitz; Arthur C. Aufderheide; Mahmoud El Najjar; Donald J. Ortner

A calcium oxalate calculus was found in the anatomically normal bladder of a 1,500-year-old native American male mummy from the Northeastern Arizona Basketmaker cultural group. Results of analysis by chemical, optical, spectrographic and x-ray diffraction methods are listed and compared to several other reported prehistoric uroliths.

Preserved human remains from the southern region of the North American continent: Report of autopsy findings

Mahmoud Y. El-Najjar; Arthur C. Aufderheide; Donald J. Ortner

Autopsies were performed in six naturally mummified bodies from the southern area of North America. The cause of death was established with reasonable certainty in two (abdominal stab wound and sand pneumoconiosis); was somewhat speculative in one (atelectasis secondary to bronchial obstruction by an aspirated tooth); and was undetermined in three. The value of such studies is discussed, and the synergistic effect of interdisciplinary contributions is emphasized.

Laurel culture human remains from Smith Mounds three and four

Michael Torbenson; Odin Langsjoen; Arthur C. Aufderheide

Lanalyse des restes humains de Smith Mounds Three and Four, dans le nord du Minnesota, permet de dater ces tertres laureliens autour de 95 av. J.-C.
