Abstract Research at Philips on pixel detectors is almost entirely devoted to development of optical frame-transfer charge-coupled-devices for electronic cameras. Especially for direct particle detection a technological process is required which differs considerably from the well-developed standard silicon processes. A variety of dedicated sensor processes have nevertheless been developed for other applications as well. As examples are discussed a sensor for a compact-disc(CD) player, a large size photodiode with small capacitance for use in connection with a slow scintillator, a low energy X-ray detector for diffraction spectrometers, and finally a high speed photodiode operating at low bias voltage, which is intended for short distance optical communication.
