Abstract—This paper describes the design of RFID based security and access control system for use in hostels inside the Punjab University premises. The system combines RFID technology and biometrics to accomplish the required task. When the RFID reader installed at the entrance of hostel detects a number, the system captures the user image and scans the database for a match. If both the card and captured image belong to a registered user, access is granted; otherwise the system turns on the alarm and makes an emergency call to the security van through GSM modem. In this way, the suspicious persons can be caught.

I n this paper, an experimental study is carried out to investigate the performance of various voltage control signal techniques for single phase PWM inverter. These techniques include single pulse width modulation, multiple pulse width modulation, sinusoidal pulse width modulation, modified sinusoidal pulse width modulation and phase displacement control. The performance of these carrier schemes are evaluated in terms of harmonic factor, total harmonic distortion and lowest order harmonic through simulation runs in MATALAB/Simulink. The technique with better harmonic spectrum is then implemented using an inexpensive and readily available AT89S52 microcontroller which generates the gating signals including dead time for switching devices comprising the inverter. The study can be employed for teaching the concepts of carrier schemes to undergraduate students taking the course of power electronics Index Terms—Contro l signal techniques, matlab/simulink, microcontroller at89s52, pulse width modulation, single phase inverter

This paper describes the design of a simple fuzzy logic controller for self balancing robot. The proposed controller is single input, single output controller. The input to the controller is tilt angle and the output forms the speed commands for the motors. The controller is designed using MATLAB and implemented with a low cost readily available AT89C52 microcontroller. Results have proved the validity of the proposed controller for balancing the robot.

In this paper, a new scheme is proposed to determine the harmonic components of a single-phase cycloconveter. The scheme computes the Fourier coefficients of the resultant positive and negative half cycle pairs of the output voltage waveform and adds them as one by the principle of superposition to determine the Fourier coefficients of the complete output voltage waveform. This scheme gives the straight computation of harmonic magnitude and angle without having to use Bessel functions, numerical techniques, and look-up tables. The scheme presented is a broad scheme that can be easily extended to the other types of the single-phase and three-phase ac-ac controllers including the on-off control and phase angle control. The presented method is theoretically proved using MATLAB and PSPICE software.

This paper describes the design of a fuzzy logic controller for ball and beam system based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques. The uncertain ball and beam system is represented by a simplified Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model. Parallel distributed compensation (PDC) technique is then used to design control gains for fuzzy regions. The convex fuzzy summation of these gains is found to stabilize the system for various initial conditions. The stabilizing loop is restructured as servo loop afterwards to track the reference commands. MATLAB simulations are performed to validate the proposed controller for ball and beam system with parametric uncertainty where it is also compared with pole placement controller.

—This paper describes the design of fuzzy logic controller for a line following robot. The controller accepts inputs from two light sensors mounted underneath the robot and generates motion commands to keep the robot on track. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with simple on-off control and it is observed that fuzzy logic control is better choice owing to its smoothness in following the desired track and lesser amount of time taken in completing the track. The platform is ideal to study in real time the various fuzzy inference systems and hence can be utilized as laboratory course work for soft computing algorithms.

This paper describes the design of an intelligent controller based on fuzzy logic for hurdle avoidance task in hexapod walking robot. The controller takes input from two ultrasonic sensors mounted in front of the robot. The outputs from the controller are translated into servo motor commands for movement of legs. The controller is designed using Fuzzy Logic Toolbox of MATLAB and its implementation is realized with a cheap, readily available AT89C52 microcontroller. Experimental results obtained after testing the controller in an environment containing obstacles has proved its validity. The design is low cost and can be used as demonstration tool for teaching concepts of soft computing algorithms.

The project replaces the existing solution employed in leather industry to measure the area of irregular pieces of leather. The designed machine uses camera to perform the task as compared to the photo sensors in the existing machine and as a result, the accuracy of the system has been increased. Also, the existing machine runs through a 486 PC with software written in Pascal and thus the maintenance of the machine is cumbersome as most of the cards for 486 PC are now obsolete. The designed machine is run through a Pentium processor with MATLAB program. The low level control of machine is performed by an inexpensive AT89C51 microcontroller which monitors the IR sensor for the detection of leather piece on machine base, drives the DC motor through a motor interfacing card and sends synchronizing signal to MATLAB for capturing the image of leather. Upon receiving the capture signal from microcontroller; image is captured and processed by MATLAB to calculate the area of leather piece.
