Vector quantization of color images

The new vector quantization methods are presented for high efficiency coding and transmission of color images. In order to encode three color components Y, C1, C2in individual or combined form effectively, techniques are developed which resulted in vector quantizer using only three factors ; mean, deviation and normalized vector. Individual component VQ is studied expanding to dynamic multi-stage VQ for motion color picture transmission at lower bit rates. Another component VQ can encode high resolution color images sufficient at 1.0 bit/color pixel. The color video codec using dynamic multi-stage VQ can be presented which transmits color motion pictures at the rate of 4-8 frames per second at 64 kbit/s.

輝度信号, 色差信号を個別に平均値分離正規化ベクトル量子化方式にて符号化するカラー動画高能率符号化手法, および輝度信号, 色差信号の各ブロックの高域成分を結合して正規化ベクトル量子化を行い, 各ブロック平均値に対する予測誤差をベクトル量子化して符号化する高解像度カラー静止画高能率符号化手法が提案される.前者は, 実際のカラー動画伝送に必要な動き追従性を重視した符号化システムに適用でき, 後者は高解像度カラー静止画における色再現の忠実度が保たれる.また, ベクトル量子化雑音の低減フィルタ, ミスマッチング誤差の改善手法について検討される.これらの方式によって, 良好な品質を持つ画像が低ビットレートで符号化再生できる.
