The occurrence of multiple supernumerary teeth is a rare phenomenon and is often found in association with syndromes such as cleidocranial dysplasia, Gardners syndrome, or cleft lip and palate. Only a few examples of nonsyndromal multiple supernumerary teeth have been reported in the literature. There is a predilection for the mandible and in the premolar area followed by the molar and anterior regions. This article reports the presence of nonsyndromal multiple supernumerary teeth involving both jaws in children and in their mothers. The clinical and radiographic appearance of the anomalies and treatment modalities are discussed.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to clarify the perimandibular neurovascularization with mandibular accessory mental foramina in a children population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to avoid complications during anesthetic and surgical procedures. MethodsThis retrospective study evaluated cone-beam CT images for bifid mandibular canals in the mandibles of 63 children (35 girls, 28 boys; age range, 7–16 years; mean age, 12.3 years). Both right and left sides were examined from CT images (n = 126), including axial, sagittal, cross-sectional, and panoramic views as well as reconstructed three-dimensional images, as necessary. The course, length, and superior and inferior angles between canals were classified and measured. ResultsBifid mandibular canals were observed in 34 (27%) of the 126 sides examined. The most frequently encountered type of bifid canal was the retromolar canal (11.1%), followed by the forward (7.14%), buccolingual (6.35%), and dental canal (2.4%). Mean lengths of bifid canals were 10.2 mm on the right side and 10.6 mm on the left side. Mean superior angles were 131 degrees on the right side and 147 degrees on the left side, whereas mean inferior angles were 47 degrees on the right side and 34 degrees on the left side. No statistically significant differences were found in the lengths or angles between the right and left sides or between boys and girls (P < 0.05). The most common position for the mental foramen was between the first and second premolars, and an accessory mental foramen was observed in 4 children (6.34%). ConclusionsThis study utilized CBCT images to identify bifid mandibular canals and accessory mental foramina in children. Cone-beam CT was found to be a useful technique for detecting secondary canals. However, despite the fact that CBCT uses less ionizing radiation than other types of three-dimensional imaging, unless the diagnostic information provided through CBCT improves treatment results, CBCT should not be recommended for use in children or adolescents.

This study used micro-CT to compare three obturation techniques with respect to void occurrence in canals filled with bioceramic sealer. Thirty extracted first mandibular premolars were prepared with a ProTaper Universal system and randomly allocated to three groups. Canals were obturated with gutta-percha and bioceramic root canal sealer, using either single-cone, lateral compaction, or Thermafil filling technique. Each tooth was then scanned with micro-CT. Voids in 2D cross-sectional images and void volumes in 3D images of all root thirds were assessed in relation to obturation technique. There was no significant difference between obturation techniques in the proportion of sections with voids (P > 0.05). However, the results of the obturation techniques significantly differed in relation to root region (P < 0.05). In conclusion, no root filling technique resulted in void-free specimens. Void volumes were highest for the single-cone technique and lowest for Thermafil, in all regions (P < 0.05).

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the presence of voids in oval root canals filled with different root canal sealers (EndoSequence BC Sealer, Smartpaste bio, ActiV GP) and to compare those with root canals filled with AH Plus sealer using micro-CT. In total, 40 freshly extracted human single-root maxillary premolars were used. Specimens instrumented with the EndoSequence NiTi rotary instrument were assigned randomly into four groups. In each group, root canals were filled with single-cone gutta-percha and one of the tested sealers. Each specimen was then scanned using micro-CT at a voxel resolution of 13.47 μm. Proportions of sections with voids in cross-sectional images and void volumes for each sealer were calculated in the apical, middle, and coronal thirds. Differences according to root canal sealers were evaluated statistically using the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney U-test at a significance level of 5%. The analysis showed a decrease in void formation in the apical third, with a significant difference between the apical and coronal thirds among bioceramic sealers, ActiV GP, and AH Plus (p < 0.05) but no significant difference between the apical and middle thirds or between the middle and coronal thirds was found for the sealers tested (p > 0.05). All root canal sealers tested resulted in voids. The bioceramic sealers (EndoSequence BC Sealer, Smartpaste bio) produced similar voids which had the fewest in the apical third of root canals among the sealers tested which can be related due to root canal anatomy variations.

The aim of this case report was to present and evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy on traumatized permanent teeth with extrusive luxation in an orthodontic patient. The treatment and follow-up evaluation of two orally luxated maxillary permanent central incisors in a 19-year-old man is described. Detailed anamnesis was taken, and extraoral, intraoral, radiographic examinations and electrical and thermal pulpal tests were performed to determine the type of the luxation and the further treatment protocol. Teeth were splinted with composite resin, and antibiotic therapy was prescribed. Low-level laser therapy was applied for 25 sessions. No root canal treatment was applied to the teeth. Continuation of the orthodontic treatment was restarted after 6 months. No sign of clinical or radiographic pathology was detected after 2 years from the end of the treatment. Teeth were identified healthy and sound without any root canal intervention. Treatments with low-level laser applications may be evaluated as noninvasive alternative treatment options in comparison with endodontic treatment for teeth with extrusive luxation more than 2 mm, especially for those who have orthodontic treatment needs.

This article reports three rare cases of birooted primary canines. In one of the three cases reported, the double-rooted primary canine was unilateral, which is a unique condition in the dental literature. One of the birooted primary canines was extracted for examination. Root canal morphology was examined using the clearing technique and three root canals were detected. The detection of birooted teeth requires a fastidious radiographic evaluation. Moreover, it should be kept in mind during endodontic therapy that the number of root canals might exceed the number of roots for these teeth.

OBJECTIVE There are a few studies that describe the oral findings in newborn children in various populations but none conducted for a Turkish population. Hence, this study determined the prevalence of intraoral findings in a group of newborns and examined the correlation among these findings with the mothers systemic and gestational medical complications, cigarette consumption during pregnancy and consanguinity between the parents. METHODS 2,021 full-term, newborn children were examined. Oral cysts, ankyloglossia, attached upper midline frenum and other medical diagnoses at birth were investigated. Medical information for each child and parent was recorded via standard questionnaire. Obtained data was analysed using the Pearson Chi-Square test (P≤0.05). RESULTS The most common findings were of oral inclusion cysts situated palatally. CONCLUSIONS There was a statistically significant relationship between the presence of oral inclusion cysts with the congenital diabetes and also insulin treatment and cigarette consumption during pregnancy. Moreover, a significant relationship was found between the presence of oral inclusion cysts and gestational diabetes and with the presence of consanguinity between the parents (P=0.004).

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was to analyze the ability of multiple compounds to seal the dental tubules using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and micro-computed tomogra-phy (micro-CT). Material and Methods Twenty-four single-root human mandibular premolars were selected and instrumented with nickel-titanium rotary file and the final file size was #40/06. They were then randomly allocated into 2 groups, and all samples were filled with single cone gutta-percha (#40/06) and one of the tested sealers (AH Plus and EndoSequence BC sealers). All specimens were scanned using micro-CT and then three from each group were randomly selected for SEM analysis. Results According to SEM, both root canal sealers showed sufficient adaptation to dentin along the whole length of the root canal, though the coronal sections presented superior sealing than the apical sections. Micro porosity analyses revealed that the volume of closed pores and the surface of closed pores had the largest values in the coronal sections, followed by the middle and the apical sections for both sealants (p<0.05). However, no significant difference was observed for those two parameters between AH Plus and EndoSequence BC sealers in any of the three sections (p>0.05), whereas they were larger in the apical section when the AH Plus sealer was used. Conclusions By using the single cone technique, neither EndoSequence or AH Plus pro-vides a porosity-free root canal filling. The EndoSequence BC sealer may have similar sealing abilities regarding the whole root canal as the AH Plus sealer. A better sealing effect could be obtained in the coronal and middle sections of a root canal than the apical part by using the tested sealers.

ABSTRACT In recent years, different biotechnological materials and modalities with antibacterial activity are being developed for oral cavity disinfection. However, the antimicrobial effects of all these materials have not been studied and understood in detail. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the antibacterial activity of ozone therapy with dentine-bonding agents (containing antibacterial monomer 12-meth-acryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide (MDPB) and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) and Ca(OH)2 for deciduous teeth in vitro. The antibacterial effectiveness of the studied materials was determined by using a tooth cavity model on cylindrical cavities created in 90 deciduous second mandibular molars. Streptococcus mutans suspension was inoculated in the cavities. The teeth were distributed into six study groups (five different modalities and a negative control group). Dentine samples, which were collected from the cavities before and after the treatment sessions, were microbiologically evaluated and the materials’ antibacterial activities were compared. There were statistically significiant differences in the S. mutans counts before and after treatment (P < 0.05). In terms of antibacterial efficiency, 60-second O3 treatment was found to be the most successful method, followed by 30-second O3, Clearfil Protect Bond (containing MDPB), Clearfil SE Bond (containing MDP) and Ca(OH)2 treatment. The results from this study suggested that longer exposure to ozone might have more beneficial effects in terms of antibacterial activity for reducing the levels of S. mutans.
