This paper presents the development of the UKM Perodua Eco-Challenge vehicle, CARevo in terms of aesthetic design, novel fabrication of car body and superior chassis design. The objective of the competition was to develop a fuel efficient car which was competent to travel the longest distance using 0.5 liter of RON95 fuel with some rules and regulation verified by the Perodua to be followed. The UKM CARevo was powered by a 660cc fuel injection engine with manual 5-speed transmission with the total of 3450 mm, 1500 mm and 1106 mm for its length, wide and height. Several design such as space frame chassis design, composite bodywork result from fiberglass with resin, aerodynamic design of car body and are the key features that is discussed in this paper.

Yusoff Lukeman; Fang Yau Lim; Shahrir Abdullah; Zulkifli R.; Azhari Shamsudeen; Mohammad Khatim Hasan

The present paper reports a simulation study of the fluid flow and thermal phenomena in the passenger vehicle underhood compartment by analysing velocity magnitude, temperature, radiator heat transfer rate and heat transfer efficiency. Analyses are carried out on a half cut passenger vehicle sample model by using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, Star CCM+. Total volume meshes of the model are 24 451 759 cells, and the speed of the car is 0.036, 40, 70, 110, 130 and 213 km/h. Investigation are performed for three dimensional conditions, steady state gas with segregated flow, constant density, turbulence flow, with the use of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes model and the K-Epsilon turbulence model. In the thermal analysis, particular attention is given to find hot spot locations under the hood. . High temperature region is observed at the right side of the hood (from the top of view) due primary heat sources from the engine. An air intake at hood is introduced in order to facilitate the airflow to engine room and to remove hot spot to the atmosphere. It is shown that the underhood average temperature decreases by 26.2% and the average airflow velocity at section plane of the centreline increases by 14.5% by adding this air intake.

The impact on quality of students through participation in international challenge project - a case study on UKM's students

Yusoff Ali; Taib Iskandar Mohamad; Azhari Shamsudeen

A survey was conducted to find the impact of quality of students and the experience gained through international challenges outdoor project activities which involved the students of the UKM. The survey was done on the students that participated in the Shell Eco Marathon which was first organized in Malaysia and in Asia region. The objective is to find out whether the students have acquired creativity, self confidence, team work, good management and good communication through project and how the students work in team in achieving the goals of the project. This brief analysis of the survey has shown that the response of the students on quality of good management, good communication and teamwork. There is some indication that project outdoor sports activities have create effective way to poster good management and communication among the team. However, on creativity and innovative thinking, the students have not acquired full creativity and innovative idea on transferring the academic knowledge applied into the project. The hard working effort has created integration among some races Malays and Chinese but the participation of Indian need to be improved. Various qualities, such as cooperation, the self confidence, yearning to be the champion and good leadership were discovered. The hard working effort and high commitment has been shown by the students to work together and having good leadership, good management and good communication. The creativity of the group is still need improvement. This survey has also shown that the project generates healthy understanding amongst students, for integration and exchanges of views for environmental conservation and future sustainable of human life in this region as well as in the whole world. The result of the survey clearly support the positive thinking of the students to demonstrate the good management and good communication amongst the group member and that what takes them to be successful in real life.

Compressed Natural Gas Direct Injection: Comparison Between Homogeneous and Stratified Combustion

Shahrir Abdullah; Wan Mohd Faizal Wan Mahmood; Saad Aljamali; Azhari Shamsudeen

Due to abundance of natural gas, the use of natural gas for automotive use, particularly for internal combustion engine (ICE), is more practical and cheaper than their future successors. Even though natural gas is a cleaner fuel than other fossil fuels and has a higher octane number and can lead to higher thermal efficiency, its low carbon number makes it less attractive as compared to gasoline and diesel. Based on its potential, an engine referred to as compressed natural gas direct injection engine (CNGDI) was designed, developed and tested to operate on compressed natural gas (CNG) as monofuel directly and centrally injected into the engine. Computational and experimental works have been performed to investigate the viability of the design. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and experimental works with homogenous combustion showed that the results were in good agreement. From experimental works, it is found that combustion characteristics could be improved by using a stratified charge piston configuration with some drawback on performance. In terms of exhaust emissions, stratified configuration causes slight increase in the emission of CO, CO 2 and NO x , which highlight a need for further study on this issue.

A study was carried out on the new design of fuel injectors for Compressed Natural Gas Direct Injection (CNGDI) engine. There are two injectors designed with 30° and 70° spray angle was developed and tested. The tests on the injectors were carried out using Single Cylinder Research Engine SCRE with compression ratio of 14:1. The SCRE test bed used computerized data acquisition system. There are two main parameters for the selection of the best injector i.e. the spray angle (30° and 70°) and the operating pressure is set at 2.0 MPa. From the study, the engine performance and the emission were recorded from the test. The results indicated that the injector with 70° spray angle achieved higher performance than the other injector.

Development of CNG direct injection (CNGDI) clean fuel system for extra power in small engine

Yusoff Ali; Azhari Shamsudeen; Shahrir Abdullah; Wan Mohd Faizal Wan Mahmood

A new design of fuel system for CNG engine with direct injection (CNGDI) was developed for a demonstration project. The development of the fuel system was done on the engine with cylinder head modifications, for fuel injector and spark plug openings included in the new cylinder head. The piston was also redesigned for higher compression ratio. The fuel rails and the regulators are also designed for the direct injection system operating at higher pressure about 2.0 MPa. The control of the injection timing for the direct injectors are also controlled by the Electronic Control Unit specially designed for DI by another group project. The injectors are selected after testing with the various injection pressures and spray angles. For the best performance of the high-pressure system, selection is made from the tests on single cylinder research engine (SCRE). The components in the fuel system have to be of higher quality and complied with codes and standards to secure the safety of engine for high-pressure operat...
