Determination of thermal diffusivity of ceramics by means of photothermal beam deflection

B. Dietrich; M Schlegel; St Heißler; Matthias Kind; W Faubel

The non-contact and non-destructive photothermal beam deflection (PBD) method has been used for the characterization of the thermal properties of Alumina (Al2O3), Mullite (3Al2O32SiO2) and Oxidic-Bonded Silicon Carbide (OBSiC) samples often used in chemical engineering. Measurements of thermal diffusivity κ have been performed. One obtains for Alumina, for Mullite and for OBSiC.

The Lévêque Analogy: Does it Work for Solid Ceramic Sponges Too?

B. Dietrich; Matthias Kind; Holger Martin

In this paper experimental results of pressure drop and heat transfer for different ceramic sponges (variables: material, ppi number and porosity) are presented. The pressure drop data is correlated using an Ergun-type equation, which yields to an accuracy of 20%. The heat transfer coefficients were determined by a transient method and correlated in dimensionless form (Nusselt number) by a power law of Reynolds and Prandtl number. Furthermore the applicability of the well known Generalized Leveque Equation (GLE) on solid ceramic sponges is checked. The GLE provides a correlation between pressure drop and heat transfer. The investigation shows that the tendency observed for the data corresponds with that of the theoretical model.Copyright
