Abstract A prototype of the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) for the ATLAS detector at the LHC has been built and tested. The TRT is an array of straw tubes which integrate tracking and electron identification by transition radiation into one device. Results of experimental measurements and of comparisons with Monte-Carlo simulations are presented for the electron identification performance as a function of various detector parameters. Under optimal operating conditions, a rejection against pions of a factor 100 was achieved with 90% electron efficiency.

Abstract A novel concept of a liquid argon calorimeter, the “Thin Gap Turbine” (TGT) calorimeter, is presented. A TGT test module, equipped with specially developed cold front-end electronics in radiation hard GaAs technology, has been operated in a particle beam. Results on its performance are given. A 40 MHz FADC system with a “circular data store” and standalone readout and play-back capability has been developed to test the properties of the TGT detector for trigger purposes. Results on trigger efficiency, response and energy resolution are given.

New fast and highly complex Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) allow the design of sophisticated decision logic within the trigger latency time of particle detectors. As an example we show the jet determination of the Hera-Hl detector at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron) Hamburg. It has to calculate all existing localized energy depositions (jets) in the calorimeter and deliver the result, sorted according to energy. The system is implemented by a network of 3/spl times/440 high density FPGAs which have to deliver the results in less than 1 /spl mu/s. The computing power of the system is equivalent to 70 billion operations per second.
