Soil algae: effects of herbicides on growth and C2H2 reduction (nitrogenase) activity

Abstract The influence of the soil-applied herbicides chlortoluron, terbutryne, metabenzthiazuron, chloridazon, and dinosebacetate as well as the fungicide carbendazime on the growth and nitrogenase activity of soil algae was tested. The degree of algal cover on the soil surface was correlated with the measured C 2 H 2 -reduction (nitrogenase) activity. All the herbicides tested at recommended rates of application caused a total suppression of algal growth and C 2 H 2 -generation for several weeks. The fungicide had no detectable effect on algal populations or C 2 H 2 reduction.
