A sharp increase in forensic age estimation of living persons has been observed in recent years. However, ethnic populations residing in different countries have been insufficiently analyzed. The aim of this study was to achieve a referral database and regression equations for dental age estimation of unaccompanied minors of Iran nationality. A total of 1200 orthopantomograms were collected from original Iran and equally divided in age categories between 10 and 27 years. On the radiographs, the developmental stage of the third molars was scored applying a Demirjian et al. scoring technique. Inter- and intra-observer reliabilities were tested using kappa statistics. Correlation between the scores of all four wisdom maxillary and mandibular third molars teeth and left/right symmetry were evaluated with spearman correlation coefficient. Students t-test on asymmetry was performed and regression formulas were calculated. The present database was the first to assemble third molar developmental scores on radiographs of Iran individuals and provided more appropriate dental age estimation of unaccompanied Iran minors. To enhance the accuracy of forensic age estimates based on third molars mineralization, the use of population-specific standards is recommended.

Objective: To determine the preventive effects of curcumin on peroxidative damage under two bed rest conditions. Methods: 20 healthy male (10 with curcumin and 10 without curcumin volunteers were selected. They were studied before, during, and just on bed rest conditions at -6° head-down-tilt (HDT) bed rest and bed rest position (BD) for 10 days. We measured the salivary and serum oxidative markers such as Malonaldehyde, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, vitamin C and E just before HDT & BD, during HDT & BD experiment, and in course time of recovery with curcumin and without curcumin groups. Results: The values of serum and salivary vitamin C & E showed statistically significant decrease in both bed rest conditions as compared to those of the conditions before and during the recovery stage. However, these levels were not significantly lowered in curcumin groups in contrast to the groups without curcumin (P>0.05). MDA and 8-OHdG levels showed significant increase in simulating microgravity and zero gravity conditions as compared to those before and in the recovery stage. However, these levels were lower in curcumin groups in contrast to the groups without curcumin (P<0.05). Serum and salivary correlation analysis revealed a strong and highly significant correlation for MDA, vitamin C & E and 8 dihydro-2 deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in the conditions before, during and in the recovery periods in both bed rest conditions. Since saliva collection is easy and non-invasive, measurements of salivary marker levels may prove to be useful in the space research. Conclusions: Curcumin prevents peroxidative damage in both bed rest conditions. Further study is required on antioxidation actions of curcumin in space microgravity conditions.

Dental cementum is a vital tissue that demonstrates continuous apposition throughout the life of a tooth. This study was conducted on 130 impacted mandibular third molars extracted from healthy patients, aged between 18 and 38 years. The buccolingual ground sections were prepared and the distance between the edges of enamel and cementum were measured with micrometer attached to a light microscope. A significant correlation (r=0.56) between age and coronal displacement of cementum in impacted teeth was calculated and a regression equation was derived for age determination.

Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) chelating agent is used to remove the smear layer more effectively than EDTA. This study was conducted to determine the antimicrobial activity of DMSA and was compared with EDTA. DMSA did not show any antimicrobial activity.

This study was conducted to compare the caries preventive efficacy of Fluoritop-SR® , the first fluoride varnish manufactured in India, with Bifluorid-12® . The demineralization inhibitory and antimicrobial effects were studied. In the present study, the demineralization inhibitory effect of the bifluorid-12® (available throughout the world) was higher and comparable to the Fluoritop-SR®.
