The effect of body position on intraocular pressure in calves

Başak Kurt; Halil H. Çağatay; Özgür Aksoy

Tonometry is one of the basic diagnostic tests used for the diagnosis of glaucoma and uveitis in veterinary ophthalmology. The Icare® Rebound Tonometer which is a new tonometric device has been shown to be useful in a wide range of species. Eyes (n = 48) of 24 Simmental and Montafon calves with a mean age of 7.5 weeks (2–16 weeks), male and female, were subjected to intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement using the Icare® Rebound Tonometer with calves standing and in lateral recumbency. The mean IOP was measured as 9.02 ± 2.38 mmHg in the right eye and 9.08 ± 2.55 mmHg in the left eye. No age-related change was found in intraocular pressure of the calves between 2 and 16 weeks of age. No difference in IOP values was observed between Simmental and Montafon calves. Body position had no effect on IOP in calves. The Icare® Rebound Tonometer was shown to be a suitable diagnostic device for IOP measurement in calves.

Abstract Wound healing requires cells that increase both collagen production as a result of inflammatory events and regeneration of epithelial tissue. The Plantago species of herbs have been used in traditional treatment of skin disorders and infectious diseases, and digestive, respiratory, reproductive and circulatory conditions. We investigated the efficacy of different concentrations of Plantago lanceolata L. extract (PLE) for wound healing owing to its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, anti-ulcerative, analgesic and immunomodulatory properties. We used 72 mice in four groups of 18. An excisional 1 cm wound was created in the skin on the back of the mice in all groups. An ointment containing 10% PLE was applied to the wound in group 1, an ointment containing 20% PLE was applied in group 2 and vaseline was applied in group 3. In group 4, no treatment was applied to the wound. On days 7, 14, and 21 of the experiment, six animals in each group were sacrificed after the wounds were photographed and specimens from the wound sites were examined. On day 14, epithelialization was more prominent in group 2, while vascularization and collagen deposition was more advanced in groups 1 and 2 compared to the other groups. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that TGF-β1 expression was elevated on day 14 in all groups; however, this elevation was more limited in groups 1 and 2 than in groups 3 and 4. Although ANGPT-2 expression increased in groups 1 and 4 on day 14, it decreased significantly in groups 2 and 3. We found that different concentrations of PLE exhibited positive effects on wound healing. Application of 10% PLE ointment may be a useful strategy for wound healing.

Unusual Traumatic Wound Caused by a Metal Halter Chain in a Horse This report presents the treatment of an old wound in a horse. The horse was found by its owner after going missing with a partially healed wound in the cervical area. The wound was suppurated and there was an embedded chain. Upon clinical examination, the animal showed a painful linear wound on its dorsal neck and had a metal halter chain in the wound. A direct radiograph showed the position of the chain in soft tissue. Surgery was performed to remove the chain following infection control and medical treatment. In the postoperative period, there was no functional impairment in cervical area. The case was remarkable in terms of the presence of a chain as a foreign body within a healed wound.

Abstract Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate fluorescein use in the diagnosis of bladder ruptures in rabbits as an experimental model. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on male New Zealand rabbits divided into a retrograde fluorescein group (n = 8) and an intravenous (IV) fluorescein group (n = 8). Following general anaesthesia, 10 mL of 10% fluorescein dye (sodium fluoresceine powder) was administered via ureterorenoscope to the bladder of the first group, and 0.5 mL of 10% fluorescein was administered intravenously to the second group. Then, the bladder was viewed through the cystoscope by urethral aspect. After experimental bladder perforation, groups were comparatively evaluated by paracentesis and laparotomy. Results: Following IV injection of fluorescein dye, the bladder veins were stained green within 10 s and then fluorescein mixed with urine flowed into bladder lumen. The green fluid flow was observed in the abdominal cavity after the perforation of the bladder in both groups. Conclusion: Fluorescein can be used as a marker in diagnosis of bladder ruptures. If there is no bleeding or intestinal content in the abdominal cavity, although a smoky yellow-green image is observed, bladder rupture can be suspected.
