10 W high efficiency 14 V HBT power amplifier for space applications

N. Le Galloul; J.F. Villemazet; Bernard Cogo; Jean-Louis Cazaux; A. Mallet; L. Lapierre

This paper presents the first development of a space-borne power amplifier using the recently developed high breakdown, high Power HBT HB20S process of UMS. The inverse F class Hybrid Power Amplifier has been designed using intensive simulation methods developed at Alcatel Space for MMICs, allowing to reach very high performances without manual tuning. The results 10 W / PAE > 65% obtained with a single chip at 1.5 GHz demonstrate the capability of the process to handle with very high power densities and efficiencies.

Design to reliability shielded vertical interconnection applied to microwave Chip Scale Packaging

P. Monfraix; T. Adam; J.L. Lacoste; Claude Drevon; G. Naudy; Bernard Cogo; Jean-Louis Cazaux; Jean-Luc Roux

This paper presents the electrical design, measurement and reliability tests of a shielded vertical interconnection dedicated to microwave solder-mount packages. Electromagnetic simulations show very good results up to 20 GHz. Test samples have been designed and manufactured. Electrical results are in accordance with the simulations with insertion loss lower than 0.1 dB up to 20 GHz for the proposed interconnection. Reliability tests of present no degradation of the after 500 thermal cycles in the [¿55°C, +125°C] temperature range.

The explosion of the telecommunication market is also impacting the space segment and the satellite payloads. All over the world, the industry is making strong efforts to reduce cost and delivering time for commercial programs, while decreasing hardware mass and increasing overall performance. Following American and Japanese initiatives, the French agencies (CNES, France Télécom. DGA) have joined their efforts to promote new and competitive technologies by implementing a technological program: STENTOR. This ambitious project aims at flying several advanced concepts which are described here for what concerns the microwave sub-systems.

High efficiency LOW AM/PM 6W C-band MMIC power amplifier for a space radar program

Y. Butel; T. Adam; Bernard Cogo; M. Soulard

This paper describes the design of a compact C-band MMIC power amplifier. Intensive non-linear and electro-magnetic simulations with accurate table-based models allowed the chips to achieve very good performance. A linear gain of 28 dB, an output power greater than 6 W with 50 % of power added efficiency and 3°/dB of AM/PM conversion at 2.5 dB gain compression have been measured over production at ambient temperature in the useful bandwidth.

Miniature Tuningless Filters for Telecommunication Active Antennas Applications

E. Husse; J.J. Herren; Jean-Christophe Cayrou; Bernard Cogo; Jean-Louis Cazaux; B. Theron

This paper describes the study of filters which are part of highly integrated telecommunication active antennas for Low Earth Orbit multimedia satellites. This filters are located between the Solid State Power Amplifiers output and the radiating element. Its function consists in reducing parasitic signals generated by the SSPA. A large quantity (more than a thousand) of miniature filters is used for such multimedia programs. It has led to very innovative solutions for this product, required the development of software and tools to allow tuningless filter design and increase reproducibility of electrical performance.

Ku Band High Power Amplifier for Active Antenna

J. Ch. Cayrou; Bernard Cogo; Jean-Louis Cazaux; B. Villeforceix

One of the key elements of a Ku Band Transmit active antenna is the power amplifier. On the one hand, the high level of integration required in such an antenna dictates a reduced size of each amplification niodule. On the other hand, the power added efficiency must be maximized in order to lower the consumption and make the thermal control of the antenna easier or possible ! The detailed design and performance of a Ku Band 6 Watts ouput power / 40 dB gain power amplifier fulfilling these constraints are given.
