This paper describes a new wide band [0; 40 GHz] vertical interconnection approach between two RF homogeneously grounded coplanar lines. It can be considered as two 90/spl deg/ vertical bends transition. Both electromagnetic simulation and measurement demonstrate very good results on the whole frequency range.

The explosion of the telecommunication market is also impacting the space segment and the satellite payloads. All over the world, the industry is making strong efforts to reduce cost and delivering time for commercial programs, while decreasing hardware mass and increasing overall performance. Following American and Japanese initiatives, the French agencies (CNES, France Télécom. DGA) have joined their efforts to promote new and competitive technologies by implementing a technological program: STENTOR. This ambitious project aims at flying several advanced concepts which are described here for what concerns the microwave sub-systems.

This paper describes current developments in Alcatel Space Industries carried out on a new concept of beam forming network, realized by molding assembly and using new 3D RF packaging technologies and interconnections. The aim is to be able to address a large panel of applications without any concept or technology major changes.

This paper describes the different parts of active antenna sub-systems currently developed in Alcatel Espace. These modules are realized according to some new 3D RF packaging technologies, mainly based on moulding assembly.

A set of MMICs at Ka-band including a 30GHz Low Noise Amplifier, a 30/ 20GHz Down-converting Mixer, a 20GHz Low Level Amplifier and a 20GHz Analog Attenuator has been designed at the LEMMIC1, manufactured and measured. Performances at the end of the first design cycle are in very good agreement with simulations.

This paper describes briefly different satellite systems that address mainly two areas in full evolution, namely : the mobile telephony and the multimedia. New infrastructures, based on the deployment of cellular network and mobile terminal, allow the user to receive, located anywhere on the land area and at any given time, information and necessary data for its private or professional activities. The new low orbit satellite systems, as Iridium and Globalstar, envisage a world coverage, they will complete in zones of strong density, cellular systems. All of the multimedia systems are intended to substatially expand the role of space-based communications, they are larger and more capable in every aspect than the current satellite systems. The multimedia satellite system will provide up 2 Mbits/s directly to the user. Multimedia are a major opportunity for the satellite communications industry.
