This study examined factors related to the marital satisfaction of African American couples and Nigerian male/African American female couples. The sample was composed of 19 homogeneous and 19 intermarried couples. Each couple participated in the research by completing the Marital Satisfaction Inventory, a researcher-designed demographic data sheet, and a follow-up questionnaire. A 2 x 2 analysis of variance procedure was performed to investigate the differences between the homogeneous and intermarried dyads. The intermarried couples consistently expressed greater dissatisfaction than their African American counterparts in the areas of global distress, time together, disagreement over finances, and conflict over child rearing. There was no interaction effect. The implications of these findings for cross-cultural therapists are discussed. Implications for future research are also examined.

The roles and responsibilities of community college counselors have altered over the last 40 years as a result of profound social, cultural, economic, and political changes. A compounding factor is the dramatic demographic shifts that have occurred across the United States. Although academic and career-related issues traditionally have been the cornerstones of the work of community college counselors, this too is changing. Reports of the escalating frequency and severity of mental health concerns of community college students have prompted counselors to increasingly emphasize personal counseling. This article summarizes some personal issues that counselors are now likely to encounter with community college students. Recommendations for community college counselors working with students experiencing personal difficulties are also included. The roles and responsibilities of community college counselors have altered over the last 40 years as a result of profound social, cultural, economic, and political changes. Social and medical sciences have historically played a role in many of the racial misconceptions educators have about various ethnic groups. The Western emphasis on scientific empiricism has served to validate questionable hypotheses and theories that contribute to destructive stereotyping. As a result, educators may continue to perpetuate racial discourse based on stereotypical beliefs, rather than facts. This article will address race, racial theory, and racism. By critically analyzing historical information, educators have the opportunity to make more informed judgements regarding the validity of these hypotheses. In so doing, educators take responsibility to contribute more objective information within their disciplines.
Educational Gerontology | 1998

It is critical that counselors link their gerontological knowledge with that of various information technologies. Not only must counselors understand themselves as they work with diverse clients, they must also stay abreast of current information as it pertains to senior adults. This serves to expand and enhance the use of vital resources applicable to this client population. Staying abreast of available information and technologies and their uses with senior adults allows the counseling profession to mind its mission of service. This article addresses considerations that are essential as counselors prepare themselves to work effectively with senior adult clients in the computer age. Ten helpful Internet sites for counselors working with this group are also highlighted.

This article addresses the influence of White American ethnic consciousness on educators in the community college classroom. In the event that issues of a multicultural nature arise in this setting, educators may find themselves responding to the information with differing attitudes and behaviors. These varied stances may stem from the process of moving from an unresolved to a more integrative stage of ethnic consciousness. White identity stages are presented, and their implications for classroom instruction are discussed.
