Abstract If ‘environmentally responsible tourism’ has a goal of providing a quality tourist experience without causing intolerable ecological and social damage, then the tour leader has a very special role to play. This paper draws on the results of a research study on nature-based tourism. The research examined the role(s) that the tour leader should play in environmentally responsible tourism, the qualifications (knowledge, skills and attitudes) that are needed to fulfil these roles, the actual qualifications and roles of tour leaders, and the training, support and evaluation that is and should be provided for tour leaders. The gaps between what ‘should be’ and what ‘are’ the roles of the tour leader are discussed, with implications for the tourism industry in general and the training and education sector of the industry in particular.

Moscardo’s (2014) latest review and critique of interpretation and interpretation research is a must read for both seasoned and aspiring researchers in the field, and we highly commend her for the timeliness, breadth and depth of her review paper. Her review draws on much of the central research in interpretation, particularly from a tourism perspective, and does an excellent job of extracting key themes and issues across a disparate body of work. More importantly, she makes a concerted effort to critically assess the limitations of current interpretation research and present a way forward.

Abstract Australias 1995 National Tourism and Hospitality Research and Education Conference was held in February in Melbourne, hosted by Victoria University. As in previous years, the conference attracted mainly educators and researchers based at Australian universities. The conference consisted of two modules, an education module consisting of 14 papers and workshops presented in a day and a half, and some 53 research papers presented in the two days devoted to the research module. As with most conferences of this nature, the quality of the papers was variable, but there was a noticeable increase in papers of theoretical and methodological merit. Thanks to the work of the conference convenor and proceedings editor, Professor Robin Shaw, and the support of the Council for Australian University Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE), a collection of 25 refereed papers was available at the conference, and is also available for purchase.
