Abstract This study provides estimates of demand function for international inbound tourist expenditures in South Korea. Econometric models for eight origin countries were constructed using selected variables. The empirical results show that income is most significant for all countries in explaining the international demand for South Korean tourism. The variables of relative prices and real exchange rates were also found to be significant and elastic. However, the effects of the oil crises and the 1988 Olympic Games on the demand for Korean tourism appear to be insignificant. Alternative schemes were explored to deal with the problems of serial correlation and multicollinearity, which are frequently encountered in econometric models using time series data.

British Columbias travel industry has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. In order to meet this continued growth and preserve its environment British Columbia must research potential problem areas. This article describes a means for establishing an index of touristic attractiveness to be used as a basis for making com parisons among touristic regions and districts. This index provides quantified comparisons to help the administrator in his decisions.

Abstract This study examines the relative importance of the existing determinants of tourism demand in the Okanagan. Because national coefficients cannot be used intercnageable with regional coefficients, it is hypothesized that the values of the Okanagan demand elasticities are likely to be lower than that of the Province and the nation. Five major markets for Okanagan tourism with identified and separate regressions run to determine the relative importance of the determinants of demand for Okanagan tourism with respect to these markets. Empirical results indicate that national coefficient will tend to overestimate the regional coefficient values. Contrary to the results of other studies for the nation as a whole, the exchange rate and travel cost did not seem to be significant determinants of Okanagan tourism receipts.

Abstract This paper introduces an approach for identifying the determinants of convention attendance at alternative cities. This approach permits planners to evaluate the relative importance of accessibility and attractiveness variables as determinants of convention attendance for each site. Four major convention sites in the USA are analysed to illustrate the procedure. In this example, accessibility was found to be far more important than attractiveness.

The purpose of the study was to estimate the economic impact on Brazos County, Texas, of a proposed weekend Wine and Jazz Festival to be produced by Messina Hof Winery. An economic impact analysis was performed using IMPLAN PRO software. The 1998 value of the US dollar and average weekend festival visitor expenditure data from Messina Hof Winery were used as inputs into the model. The results indicated that this single event would generate

Abstract This study examines differential income and employment multipliers according to types of industrial organization. Because of differences in production processes and purchasing patterns, it is hypothesized that the size of the multipliers varies inversely with size, scale, degree of affiliation, and degree of outside-ownership. Differential multipliers for the accomodation sector were calculated by adapting the regional tourism models developed by Archer to an 11 sector input-output model of metropolitan Victoria, BC. The findings support the hypotheses of the study, since significant variations and correlations were found for the multipliers and other selected variables by organization types.

Abstract Differential tourist-income multipliers were calculated for Turkey using conventional input-output methodology and standard linear equations. High values were obtained for the ratio multipliers demonstrating the importance of secondary effects to the Turkish economy. Results indicated that tourists who spent more on retail purchases and less on hotels and restaurants, had a greater propensity to generate more direct and induced income. Information on relative impacts and touristspending patterns could therefore be useful to the policy makers.

benefits in a system framework. Presentations by Egon Smeral “Why We Discuss the Environmental Impact of Tourism? Reasons and Strategies for Reducing”, Stephan Wanhill, “Tourism and The Environment: A National Tourist Board Perspective”, and finally “The Concept of Compatibility in Determining Recreation Carrying Capacity” were quite novel in their approach. In conclusion, the Envisotour Vienna ‘92 was quite a success, and the organizers should be congratulated for this tine conference. The proceedings, Stratqies for Reducing the Environmental Impact vf Tourism (edited by W. Pillmann and S. Predl, in English and German) is over 760 pages long. Copies of the proceedings can be obtained from International Society for Environmental Protection, Marxergasse 3120, A-1030 Vienna, Austria. A report on ISEP is published in this issue of Annals. 0 0
