Abstract The aldol products formed by the reaction between α-(N-benzyl or N-Cbz)amino aldehydes and lithium enolates of various ketones, were subjected to hydrogenolysis to give polysubstituted pyrroles in good yields (50–91%). The scope and limitations of this methodology are explored.

Abstract Aldol reactions of the sodium enolates of α-(N,N-dibenzylamino) ethyl ketones proceed in a highly diastereoselective fashion and result in the formation of the all syn adduct. The observed stereoselectivities are most easily understood in the context of an open transition state.

Abstract Kinetic enolates of a number of α-(N,N-dibenzyl)amino methyl ketones were allowed to react with a variety of aldehydes. High diastereoselectivity was observed for sodium enolates compared to their lithium counterparts.
