Determining the ERP package‐selecting criteria: The case of Turkish manufacturing companies

Birdoğan Baki; Kemal Çakar

Purpose – To determine what criteria are used in enterprise resource planning (ERP) selection process and what criteria are the most important for firms.Design/methodology/approach – Through an extensive literature review, 15 selection criteria for the ERP selection process were identified and two were added after initial interviews. A questionnaire including these criteria was formed to secure data from companies. A single informant method was used for each company. To measure the importance of various critical factors a five‐point Likert scale was used in the questionnaire.Findings – Fit with parent/allied organisation systems is identified as the most important selection criterion. Cross‐module integration, compatibility between other systems, and references of the vendor are identified important factors respectively. Statistically significant differences were also determined between companies using MRP/MRPII versus those using own or no program for “better fit with organisational structure” and “fit w...

Antecedents and performance impacts of product versus process innovation

İlker Murat Ar; Birdoğan Baki

Purpose – The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships between seven antecedent factors (R&D strategy, top management support (TMS), customer focus (CF), organizational learning capability (OLC), creative capability (CC), organizational collaboration (OC), and supplier relationship (SR)), two innovation types (product and process), and firm performance (FP).Design/methodology/approach – The paper formulates 16 hypotheses from the literature review. These hypotheses are tested using structural equation modeling with data collected from 270 managers of small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) located in Turkish science and technology parks (STPs).Findings – The findings indicate that both of product and process innovation have a strong and positive association with FP. While antecedents such as R&D strategy, TMS, CF, CC, and SR have significant impact on product innovation, other antecedents such as OLC and OC have a significant and positive impact on process innovation.Practical impl...

Purpose – This paper seeks to provide new solutions to cargo companies’ service quality efforts by integrating different scientific methodologies.Design/methodology/approach – Strengths and weaknesses of logistics services of a well known cargo company in Turkey are defined by using a service quality scale (SERVQUAL), service quality attributes are categorized using the Kano model in order to see how well these attributes are able to satisfy customer needs, and findings are transferred to quality function deployment (QFD).Findings – The findings of the Kano model show that ten of the 27 service quality attributes can be categorized as “attractive”, implying the maximum effect on consumer satisfaction. Through the customer priority level of QFD, the three most important service quality attributes are found to be: VIP Service, informing customers about delivery time before sending, and taking deliveries from customers’ addresses. Also, strengthening information technology infrastructure is the most importan...

İlker Murat Ar; Coşkun Hamzaçebi; Birdoğan Baki

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the teaching performance of Turkish Business Schools (BSs). It also aims to determine the degree of importance of factors affecting the teaching performance of Turkish BSs. The final objective is to test the functionality and applicability of the model.Design/methodology/approach – This study presents a ranking approach based on grey relational analysis (GRA). While evaluating the BSs, data were collected for 19 Turkish BSs in terms of five main criteria such as OSS score; Number of faculty members; Number of students per faculty member; the mean of KPSS score; and the standard deviation of KPSS score. In the analysis, three weighted methods were integrated into the GRA in order to weight the criteria.Findings – According to this result, the main factor influencing the teaching performance of Turkish BSs is the OSS score. This study can also confirm that the results obtained from the ranking orders using the proposed methods are reliable and these results ...

İskender Peker; Birdoğan Baki; Mehmet Tanyaş; İlker Murat Ar

Site selection for logistics centers is one of the most strategic decisions in logistics. This study addresses the problem of logistics center site selection, using Analytic Network Process/Benefits, Opportunities, Costs and Risks, which is a multi-criteria decision making technique. The decision problem is applied to the city of Trabzon, which is an important city of the Eastern Black Sea Region in Turkey. First, the results are evaluated in terms of each sub-network and each group and, next, are consolidated for each alternative. They yield that Alternative A is the most appropriate logistics center location of all in Trabzon. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis results emphasize that the decision model is robust.

A Comparative Analysis of 3PL Applications in Manufacturing Firms from Seven Countries

Birdoğan Baki; İlker Murat Ar

Third-party logistics (3PL), as a source of competitive advantage for companies, is one of the most important issues discussed in logistics in today business environments. So, it has increasingly attracted the attention of researchers. This paper provides a comparative analysis of 3PL applications in manufacturing firms. First, a summary of the literature concerning empirical studies on the use of 3PL services by manufacturing firms is presented. Second, the results obtained from empirical studies in seven countries are compared in terms of the main topics of 3PL, which are the extent of use, the decision-making process, third-party services used, implementation, training, commitment to the concept and expenditures, organizational impact, and plans for the future. Thus, this paper presents the differences and similarities between these countries based on a comparative and statistical analysis. It is concluded that the extent of use of 3PL services is high in the world, the long-term relationship between parties should be taken into consideration in the use of 3PL services, and that development of outsourcing in the logistics industry will continue to increase.
