On occupation structure and location pattern in the stockholm region

Christer Anderstig; Björn Hårsman

Abstract An entropy model is used to decompose employment changes into effects of industry, occupation and region. The results from an application to Sweden indicate that metropolitan areas in general, and Stockholm in particular, have locational-advantages in knowledge-oriented activities. The location of employment and firms in the Stockholm region is analyzed by using both an entropy model and a logit model. The results demonstrate the importance of introducing different measures of accessibility. The location of knowledge-oriented activities is shown to be significantly influenced by the location pattern of the labour force.

Worker and Workplace Heterogeneity and Residential Location: A Historical Perspective on Stockholm

Björn Hårsman; John M. Quigley

Most studies of the role of transportation in residential location assume that an individual’s human capital and labor force experience are of no relevance to the location of his or her worksite and to the tradeoff between commuting and housing costs. Recent models often assume a polycentric metropolitan area and do recognize non-central workplace concentrations, but concentrations are undifferentiated by industry or occupation. Traditional traffic models rely upon the number of jobs and workers in different subareas, distance costs, income and sometimes age and family type to explain an observed commuting pattern. It is implicitly assumed that all workers are equally attracted to all kinds of jobs and that, moreover, all workers have the same chance of getting any job.

High Technology Worker Mobility

Christer Anderstig; Björn Hårsman

The most important institution and the driving force of Francis Bacon’s utopian society Bensalem was a scientific foundation called Salomo’s house. Hopefully, science will never become as dominant as Bacon prophesied. However, the ongoing structural transformation of the world economy certainly indicates a strongly increasing knowledge orientation.
