Native american food and medicinal plants 7 : Antimicrobial tetronic acid from lomatium dissectum

Bradford C. Vanwagenen; John H. Cardellina

Abstract A pair of homologous 2-alkenyl-3-hydroxy-penta-2,4-dien-4-olides has been isolated from the umbellifer Lomatium dissectum and found to be the principal antimicrobial metabolites in the crude extracts of the whole plant. These unstable tetronic acids were partially characterized from spectroscopic data, but chemical transformations were required to secure the complete structures. Details of the isolation, identification and bioassay results are provided; a probable biosynthetic pathway to these compounds is discussed.

Short, efficient syntheses of the antibiotic eudistomins I and T

Bradford C. Vanwagenen; John H. Cardellina

Abstract Simple, concise syntheses of eudistomins I and T, β-carboline antibiotics from the tunicate Eudistoma olivaceum , have been achieved. The route utilized is an attractive alternative to traditional β-carboline syntheses and is amenable to preparation of a wide range of analogs.

THE ADDITION OF AMINES TO DIISOBUTYLALUMINUM-IMINE COMPLEXES. PREPARATION OF NPS R-568 HYDROCHLORIDE

Robert M. Barmore; Sarah R. Logan; Bradford C. Vanwagenen

Abstract A facile procedure for the preparation of secondary and tertiary amines from nitriles has been developed. The addition of amines to diisobutylaluminum-imine complexes derived by treating nitriles with DIBAL-H was found to proceed in moderate to good yields and was used to prepare NPS R-568 (1) hydrochloride, a potent calcium receptor agonist.
