Disability: Representation, Disclosure, Access, and Interdependence

Brenda Jo Brueggemann; Stephanie L. Kerschbaum

We must begin with representational (dis)claimers. We are deaf. Which is to say, in a way, that we are disabled. But it is also to say, in a contradictory way, that we are not (disabled)—that we occupy a space curiously related to disability. Although it is not necessarily common public knowledge, those who identify as “deaf” or “disabled” often understand that the two identities are not parallel or mutually inclusive of each other.
