Abstract Although exercise promotes beneficial effects in diabetic patients, some studies have questioned the degree of their importance in terms of the increase in total energy expenditure. In these studies, the decrease of physical activity levels (PAL) was referred as “compensatory effect of exercise”. However, our aim was to investigate whether aerobic exercise has compensatory effects on PAL in type 2 diabetes patients. Eight volunteers (51.1 ± 8.2 years) were enrolled in a supervised exercise programme for 8 weeks (3 d · wk−1, 50–60% of VO2 peak for 30–60 min). PAL was measured using tri-axial accelerometers in the 1st, 8th and 12th weeks. Biochemical tests, cardiorespiratory fitness, anthropometric assessment and body composition were measured in the 2nd and 11th weeks. Statistical analysis was performed using non-parametric tests (Friedman and Wilcoxon, P < 0.05). We found no significant differences in PAL between intervention periods, and participants spent the majority of their awake time in sedentary activities. However, the exercise programme generated a significant 14.8% increase in VO2 peak and a 15% reduction in fructosamine. The exercise programme had no compensatory effects on PAL in type 2 diabetes patients, but improved their cardiorespiratory fitness and glycaemic control.

Introduction: This study’s goal was to outline the profi le of practitioners of aerobic exercises in the campus of the Federal University of Viçosa MG Brazil. Materials and Methods: It was used a descriptive transversal action, randomly evaluating 50 men with an average age of 41.7 ± 5.4 years-old (30 to 50 years-old), through a questionnaire specifi cally formulated for that purpose. The statistical analysis was composed of descriptive data, through the distribution of percentage averages and standard deviation of the answers. Results: The main results were: 58% of individuals had the residence located on the suburbs of Viçosa; the weekly frequency of exercise of 78% of the sample ranged between three to fi ve sessions; 49% of the practitioners selected walk as exercise; the duration of related training session for 44% of the individuals was around 60 min; the usual shift of the practice of exercises, chosen by 66%, was the night; and 52% practiced aerobic exercises for more than two years with the goals improvement of health (26%), improvement in physical fi tness (22%) and weight loss with 16%. Discussion: Based on the results it is possible to conclude that the profi le is characterized by residents of the suburbs, with regular practice of physical activity, preferably opting for walking during the night, taking as objective the improvement of health.
