Physiological, anthropometric, strength, and muscle power characteristics correlates with running performance in young runners.

Physiological, anthropometric, strength, and muscle power characteristics correlates with running performance in young runners. J Strength Cond Res 29(6): 1584–1591, 2015—The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physiological, anthropometric, strength, and muscle power variables and a 5-km time trial (5kmT) in young runners. Twenty-three runners volunteered to participate in this study. Height, body mass, body fat, and fat-free mass (FFM) were measured. The subjects underwent laboratory testing to determine maximal oxygen uptake (V[Combining Dot Above]O2max), velocity at ventilatory threshold (VVT), running economy (RE), velocity associated with maximal oxygen uptake (vV[Combining Dot Above]O2max), and peak velocity (PV). Peak torque, total work, and power were measured by an isokinetic dynamometer at 60°·s−1 and 240°·s−1 angular velocities. Right and left knee flexor and extensor torques were evaluated. Finally, the participants performed a 5kmT. Multiple regression and correlation analysis were used to determine the variables that significantly related to 5kmT. Strength and muscle power variables did not correlate with 5kmT. However, most physiological variables were associated with 5kmT. Velocity at ventilatory threshold alone explains 40% of the variance in 5kmT. The addition of the RE at speed 11.2 km·h−1 (RE11.2) and FFM to the prediction equation allowed for 71% of the adjusted variance in 5kmT to be predicted. These results show that strength and muscle power variables are not good predictors of 5kmT; however, the physiological variables presented high prediction capacity in the 5kmT. Moreover, the anthropometric measures showed significant influence in performance prediction.

Comparação de indicadores físicos e fisiológicos entre atletas profissionais de futsal e futebol

Many professional sports training periodize soccer and futsal similarly. However, little is known about physical and physiological responses of futsal players. This study compared anthropometric, aerobic capacity and power production among professional indoor and outdoor soccer players. Eleven futsal players (age 24.1±2.4 years) and 21 soccer players (age 22.6±3.6 years) males underwent two experimental sessions: (i) anthropometric measurements, maximal effort test treadmill and (II) test speed of 30 meters (repeated sprint ability, CSA). It was applied t-test for independent samples to verify possible differences between the modalities (p>0,05). The futsal players showed higher values of HRVT (177,2±10 e 67,1±10,8 bpm) VO2max ;VO2VT; %VO2max (62,5±4,3 e 52,1±4,6; 58,7±5,6 e 43,1±4,6; 76±8,4 e 93,9±5,3 ml·kg-1·min-1) compared with soccer players, respectively. These results demonstrate the need for specific methods of training for outdoor and indoor soccer.

Comparação das respostas fisiológicas, perceptuais e afetivas durante caminhada em ritmo autosselecionado por mulheres adultas de três diferentes faixas etárias

To compare the physiological, perception and affective responses during treadmill walking at a self-selected pace by previously sedentary women from three age groups. Methods: Sixty-six healthy women were assigned into three groups according to their age: GI (20.0-25.0 yr, n = 22), GII (30.0-35.0 yr, n = 22) and GIII (40.0-45.0 yr, n = 22). Each participant performed (i) an initial medical screening, anthropometric assessment and familiarization; (ii) an incremental treadmill test to determine O2max; and (iii) a 20-min treadmill walking bout at a self-selected pace. During the 20-min of treadmill walking at a self-selected pace, the physiological (oxygen uptake, O2 and heart rate, HR) responses were continuously recorded. The perception (Borg-RPE for the overall body, 6-20) and affective (Feeling Scale) responses were measured every 5 min throughout the test. One-way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis (p < 0.05). Results: one-way ANOVA demonstrated that there were not significant differences in O2 and HR during a 20-min treadmill walking bout at a self-selected pace among the three age groups. However, the % O2Max, % O2LV, %FCMax, and %FCLV were significantly higher in GIII compared with GI and GII (p < 0.05). Finally, the perception and affective responses during a 20-min treadmill walking bout at a self-selected pace were similar among the three age groups. Comparação das respostas fisiológicas e perceptuais obtidas durante caminhada na esteira em ritmo autosselecionado entre os sexos

O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar as respostas fisiologicas e perceptuais entre os sexos durante a caminhada na esteira em ritmo autosselecionado. Participaram 17 homens e 17 mulheres, fisicamente ativos, com media de idade de 23,32 ± 3,06 anos, submetidos a duas sessoes experimentais: (I) avaliacao antropometrica e teste incremental maximo, e (II) um teste de 20 minutos de caminhada na esteira em ritmo autosselecionado. Para a analise estatistica, empregou-se teste t de Student para medidas independentes no intuito de verificar as possiveis diferencas entre os sexos, adotando p < 0,05. A velocidade de caminhada autosselecionada pela amostra masculina foi superior a verificada na feminina (1,65 ± 0,18 e 1,50 ± 0,12m·seg-1, respectivamente) o que consequentemente resultou em maior O2 absoluto nos homens comparado as mulheres (21,2 ± 5,5 e 18,3 ± 2,7, respectivamente). No entanto, ambos os sexos buscaram caminhar em mesma intensidade relativa % O2max, (37,5 ± 10,7 homens e 40,3 ± 7,2 mulheres). Em relacao a percepcao subjetiva de esforco (PSE), podemos verificar que ambos os sexos nao demonstraram diferencas significativas (10,2 ± 1,0 homens e 9,8 ± 1,2 mulheres). Os achados do presente estudo demonstram que, independente do sexo, jovens adultos fisicamente ativos autosselecionaram similar intensidade relativa que refletiu em similar PSE. Alem disso, a caminhada em intensidade autosselecionada demonstra-se como estimulo insuficiente para proporcionar melhora no condicionamento cardiorrespiratorio nesta populacao.
