Because of the characteristics of cable-supported bridges, the cable tensile force is considered a critical item in their maintenance. In particular, because the evaluation of the cable tensile force in a cable-stayed bridge is essential for understanding the general status of the structural system, identifying the initial values of this force in the construction of a bridge and then accurately predicting and comparing its estimated values during traffic use are very important tasks for the maintenance of a cable-stayed bridge. Therefore, in this study, a vision-based monitoring system that utilizes an image processing technique was developed to estimate the tensile force of stay cables during traffic use. A remotely controllable pan-tilt drive was installed in the developed vision-based monitoring system to estimate the forces on multiple cables using a single system. The use of a 20× electric zoom lens made it possible to achieve sufficient resolution to remotely derive the dynamic characteristics of the stay cables.

In general, deflection limit criteria of bridge design specifications would have been considered based on the static serviceability and structural stability. Dynamic serviceability induced from bridge vibration, as a comfort limit, actually has not been included in the criteria. Thus, it is necessary for dynamic serviceability to be considered in bridge vibration problems and for comfort limit on vibration to be needed for evaluating dynamic serviceability of bridges. In this paper, comfort limits of bridge structures considering the time duration exposed by vibration were examined with frequency and time dependent comfort limits, and they were evaluated by using the vibration signals measured from the existing bridges. Therefore, it is resulted that the time-dependent comfort limit considering the duration of vibration is an efficient estimate for evaluating dynamic serviceability of bridges.

In this study, a CFPBS (Cone-type Friction Pendulum Bearing System) was developed which controls the acceleration delivered to the structure to prevent damage and degradation of the critical communication equipment in case of an earthquake. The isolation performance of the CFPBS was evaluated by numerical analysis. The CFPBS was manufactured in the shape of a cone differenced from the existing FPS (Friction Pendulum System), and a pattern was engraved on the friction surface. The natural frequencies of the CFPBS were evaluated from a free-vibration test with the seismic isolator system consisting of four CFPBSs. In order to verify its earthquake-resistant performance, a numerical analysis program was created from the equation of the CFPBS induced from the equations of motion. A simplified theoretical equation of the CFPBS was proposed to manufacture the equipment which could demonstrate the necessary performance. Artificial seismic waves satisfying the maximum earthquake scale of the Korean Building Code-Structural (KBC-2005) were created and verified to review the earthquake-resistant performance of the CFPBS by numerical analysis. The superstructural mass of the CFPBS and skew angle of the friction surface were considered for numerical analysis with El Centro NS (1940), Kobe NS (1995) and artificial seismic waves. The CFPBS isolation performance evaluation was based on the results of numerical analysis and the executed comparative analysis between the results from numerical analysis and the simplified theoretical equation under the same conditions.

FPS(friction pendulum system) is an isolation system which is possible to isolate structures from earthquake by pendulum characteristic. Natural frequencies of the structures could be determined by designing the radius of curvature of FPS. Thus, response vibration could be reduced by changing natural frequency of structures from FPS. But effective periods of recorded seismic wave were various and estimation of earthquake characteristic could be difficult. If effective periods of seismic wave correspond to natural frequency of structures with FPS, resonance can be occurred. Therefore, CFPBS(cone-type friction pendulum bearing system) was developed for controlling the acceleration and displacement of structure by the slope of friction surfaces. Structural natural frequency with CFPBS can be changed according to position of ball on the friction surface which was designed cone-type. Therefore, superstructures on CFPBS could be isolated from earthquake. In this study, seismic performance of CFPBS was evaluated by numerical analysis and shaking table test.

In order to get dynamic serviceability of a train travelling on a railway bridge, comfort limits with the deflection of bridge and vertical acceleration on car body are proposed in Eurocode, Shinkansen design criteria, The design guideline of the Honam High-speed railway. The design guideline of the Honam High-speed railway has quoted Eurocode. Therefore it is expected that supplementation of comfort limit of railway bridge according to expansion of span length and the improvement traveling speed of trains in the future would relatively fall behind developed countries in railway. Therefore, in order to secure technological competitiveness in world market, the study was conducted to propose the deflection limit based on vibration serviceability of railway bridges that can consider bridge-train interaction and travelling speed increase. The parameter study and bridge-train dynamic interaction analysis was conducted to figure out the correlation of vertical acceleration on car body and bridge displacement according to the increase in travelling speed. Also, the trend of increasing vertical acceleration on car body according to the increase in travelling speed was confirmed, and the amplification coefficient of vertical acceleration on car body was suggested. And the deflection form and vibration of the bridge were assumed to be in harmonic motion, and transfer function and the amplification coefficient were used to develop the dynamic serviceability deflection limit of the high-speed railway bridge as a formula.

PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration) is the parameter which indicates the peak value for strong ground motion and is mainly due to the intensity of the seismic wave. Usually, seismic waves can consist of different characteristics and can have different effects on structures. Therefore, it may be undesirable that the effects of a seismic wave are evaluated only based on the PGA. In this study, time history analysis was executed with a single degree of freedom model for inelastic seismic analysis. The numerical model was assumed to be a perfect elasto-plastic model. Input accelerations were made with El Centro NS (1940), other earthquake records and artificial earthquakes. The displacement ductility demand and cumulative dissipated energy, which were calculated from other artificial earthquakes, were compared. As a result, different responses from other seismic waves which have the same PGA were identified. Therefore, an index which could reflect both seismic and structural characteristics is needed. The SI (Spectrum Intensity) scale which could be obtained from integration by parts of the velocity response spectrum could be an index reflecting the inelastic seismic response of structures. It can be possible to identify from correlation analysis among the SI scale, displacement ductility demand and cumulative dissipated energy that the SI scale is sufficient to be an index for the inelastic response of structures under seismic conditions.
