PURPOSE The Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (MHQ) is a domain-specific questionnaire that was developed to be used as a standardized instrument capable of measuring outcomes for patients with all types of hand disorders. The purpose of this study was to develop the Turkish version of the MHQ and to examine whether it is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the outcomes in hand disorders. METHODS Translation and back-translation of the MHQ were performed, according to published guidelines. A total of 70 patients with hand complaints completed the final version of the MHQ and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire Turkish version (DASH-T) twice, on their first visit and after an interval of 7 days. Visual analog scale (VAS) results for pain intensity and grip strength measurements of the individuals were also taken in both assessments consecutively. RESULTS Translation and back-translation revealed no major difficulties. The Turkish version of the MHQ met set criteria of reliability and validity. The intraclass correlation coefficient of the test-retest reliability for the 6 subscales ranged from 0.79 to 0.96. The internal consistency of the MHQ, estimated by Cronbachs alpha, ranged from 0.85 to 0.96 for all subscale scores. There were high to moderate correlations between MHQ and DASH scores and VAS and grip strength scores of the injured side. CONCLUSIONS The Turkish version of the MHQ has excellent test-retest reliability and validity, and it is an adequate and useful instrument for measuring functional disability in hand disorders of Turkish-speaking patients.

Abstract Aim: The Milliken Activities of Daily Living Scale (MAS) is a self-report scale to address limitation of ability to perform daily tasks in upper extremity injuries. It can address the necessity of each task, which makes MAS useful while planning individual treatment. The objective of this study was to perform cross-cultural adaptation of the MAS TURKISH and to evaluate its reliability and validity for Turkish-speaking patients with upper extremity conditions. Method: A total of 99 patients were asked to complete the adapted MAS and DASH at baseline and one week after the initial assessment. Also grip strength was evaluated with an interval of one week. Results: The reliability of the adapted version was good, with high internal consistency (Cronbachs alpha = 0.964) and test–retest reliability (interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.772) for the total score. A statistically significant correlation between MAS and DASH scores and grip strength scores of the injured side was obtained. Conclusion: The results of the study have shown that the Turkish version of MAS has excellent test–retest reliability and validity. It is a suitable assessment for evaluating function and giving an overview of activity limitations in many performance areas in a Turkish population.

The purpose of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the Sensory Profile (SP), which is used to measure sensory processing abilities of children ages of 3–10 years, and test its reliability and validity for use with Turkish children with autism. A cross-cultural adaptation process was carried out by bilingual experts, following typical guidelines. The test-retest reliability, internal consistency, and construct validity studies of the Turkish SP were done for 144 children with autism. A comparison was also made between results of children with autism and 101 healthy children to test the validity of the Turkish SP. There were significant differences between results of autistic and healthy children on all subsections of the test. The Cronbachs as ranged from .63 to .97 for all subsections except I, J, and N, which had poor internal consistency reliability. Test-retest reliability over a one-week period was excellent (ICC > .90).

Objective The aim of this study was to compare the activities listed in DASH, MHQ, QuickDASH with the activities listed in Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) in a Turkish patient population with hand injury. Methods COPM questionnaire was administered to 163 participants (61 male and 102 female; mean age 40.72 ± 13.70 years). The activities that were stated in COPM were categorized and checked whether they were present in DASH-T, MHQ, QuickDASH. Results The highest rated stated activities were “carrying a heavy object” (39.2%), “cleaning the house” (25.7%) and “writing” (15.9%). DASH reflects 30% whereas MHQ and QuickDASH reflect 16.32% and 10.2% of the problematic activities, respectively. Conclusion None of three questionnaires have satisfactory results for reflecting the problematic activities among hand injured Turkish people. Open ended interviews should be irrevocable part of assessment process in order to describe a person-center treatment program.

Rehabilitation of Patients with Prostate Cancer

Meral Huri; Burcu Semin Akel; Sedef Şahin

Cancer rehabilitation involves helping an individual with cancer to regain maximum psychological, physical, cognitive, social, and vocational functioning with the limits up to disease and its treatments in an interdisciplinary team concept. Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent male malignancies in the world. Prostate cancer treatment options have the risk of some side effects including loss of muscle strength, fatigue, pain, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, cognitive problems, decrease in bone density, weight loss, gynecomastia, and hot flushes with stress-related psychosocial problems. Relative to other cancers, the prognosis of men with prostate cancer is much better and the potential treatment-related side effects have important implications which can affect the health-related quality of life (QOL) of this population. Recent studies support the efficiency of multimodal treatment to recognize, prevent, and increase functional recovery with an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team which includes physical and occupational therapists. This chapter describes briefly cancer rehabilitation and rehabilitation approaches at every stage of patients with prostate cancer for minimiz‐ ing the morbidity rate associated with prostate cancer treatment to increase occupa‐ tional participation and improve QOL.

Burcu Semin Akel; Orkun Tahir Aran; Çiğdem Öksüz

Purpose/Hypothesis: Joint hypermobility is defined as an abnormal increase in the range of active and passive motion, which is a very common situation in musicians. However, its relation to injuries and on musical performance is not clear; it is thought that unstable joint can be harmed with repetitive playing task. Therefore, stabilization exercises can have a positive effect in hypermobile hands. This study is aimed to investigate the effect of stabilization exercises in musicians having hypermobile joints. Material and Methods: Seventy-five musicians who are playing string instruments and piano at conservatory were assessed if they have joint laxity, and it was found that 45% of this population had joint laxity. The ones who had laxity have asked if they would like to attend to an exercise program aiming stabilization. Twelve people accepted to do the exercises. These 12 people have been assessed by Disability of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH). In addition, they are asked to rate their musical performance, fatigue, and pain according to visual analogue scale, and hand strength was evaluated with pinchmeter. Stabilization exercises were given for 4 weeks; once a week, students worked with the therapist, and during the whole week, they did home exercises. Ten people completed the exercise program, and they were evaluated again at the end of the month. Results: The mean DASH score (musician part) of the musicians was 25.12; this score decreased significantly (P < .05) after exercises. Also hand strength and musical performance increased significantly(P < .05). Conclusion: When treating a musician patient, if she or he has joint hyperlaxity, adding stabilization exercises to rehabilitation program can be useful. It is also suggested that musicians with hypermobile joints can do stabilization exercises to prevent their joints from injury and to increase musical performance. Preventive programs of musicians mostly include stretching exercises, however 1 or 2 stabilization exercise can be added for especially musicians with hyperbole joints.
