Environmentally benign, one-pot synthesis of pyrans by domino Knoevenagel/6π-electrocyclization in water and application to natural products

In water medium, environmentally benign, facile, and efficient synthesis of pyrans was achieved in good yields by the reactions of a variety of cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls with several α,β-unsaturated aldehydes. The key strategy was a formal [3+3] cycloaddition by domino Knoevenagel/6π- electrocyclization. This methodology was applied to the synthesis of biologically interesting pyranocoumarin, pyranoquinolinone, and pyranonaphthoquinone derivatives along with selected natural and non-natural products.

Evolution of Tip Vortices Generated by Two Bladed Rotor in Hover at Early Wake Ages

In order to investigate change of vortex structures and its evolving processes, two dimensional LDV system was used for measurement of velocity vectors of tip vortex, and PIV system was also used for visualizations of tip vortex array for two bladed rotor, respectively. Experiments provided vortex locations, tangential and axial velocity components of tip vortex at six wake ages of 9.5, 10.5, 60.5, 99.5, 129.5, 169.5 and corresponded six wake ages shifted with 180 degrees per each. It was resulted that tip vortices generated by the first blade satisfy Landgrebe’s model for their vortex locations even after they were accelerated by the second blade in downstream. Tangential velocity components of tip vortices follow Vatistas’ n=2 model on both inside and outside regions of rotor slipstream without loss of vortex circulation. Axial velocity profiles revealed that there were small but significant perturbations just outside the primary vortex core which implies the second blade affects the wake substantially. It was also found that tip paths of each blade were not willing to be coincided intrinsically.

Evaluation of Reverse Electrodialysis System with Various Compositions of Natural Resources

Salinity gradient power (SGP) has attracted significant attention because of its high potential. In this study, we evaluate reverse electrodialysis (RED) with various compositions of available resources. The polarization curve (I– V characteristics) shows linear behavior, and therefore the power density curve has a parabolic shape. We measure the power density with varying compartment thicknesses and inlet flow rates. The gross power density increases with decreasing compartment thickness and increasing flow rate. The net power density, which is the gross power density minus the pumping power, has a maximum value at a compartment thickness of 0.2 mm and an inlet flow rate of 22.5 mL/min. The power density in RED is also evaluated with compositions of desalination brines, seawater, river water, wastewater, and brackish water. A maximum power density of 1.75 W/m is obtained when brine discharged from forward osmosis (FO) and river water are used as the concentrated and the diluted solutions, respectively. † Corresponding Author, [email protected] C 2015 The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers 권길성 · 박병호 · 김덕한 · 김대중 514 발전(salinity gradient power, SGP)에 대한 관심이 급 증하고 있다. 농도차 발전은 사용되는 막에 따라 크게 압력지연삼투 (pressure retarded osmosis, PRO) 와 역전기투석(reverse electrodialysis, RED)로 나눌 수 있다. 이 중, 역전기투석 발전은 구동부가 존재하지 않아 높은 신뢰도를 가진다는 점과 직접 적인 에너지 변화 과정으로 인해 높은 효율을 가 진다는 장점이 있다. 역전기투석 발전은 1950 년대에 Pattle에 의하여 처음 제안되었다. 그러나 이온을 선택적으로 투과 하는 이온교환막(ion exchange membrane, IEM)의 더 딘 발전으로 인해 2000 년대 초반까지 는 연구가 정체되었고, 2000 년대 중반 이후로 이온교환막의 비약적인 발전과 함께 재조명 받고 있다. Fig. 1 은 역전기투석 장치의 발전원리를 보여주고 있다. 양 이온교환막(cation exchange membrane, CEM)과 음이 온교환막(anion exchange membrane, AEM)이 교대로 배열된 구조에 고농도용액(해수)과 저농도용액(강 물)을 번갈아 공급하게 되면 화학적포텐셜 차이에 의하여 고농도용액으로부터 저농도용액으로 이온이 이동을 하게 된다. 이 때, 양이온은 양이온교환막으 로 음이온은 음이온교환막으로 이동하며 역전기투 석 발전 장치 내부에 전기적 중립이 깨지게 되고 이를 유지하기 위하여 이온의 이동방향과 반대로 전위가 형성되게 된다. 위와 같은 이온의 흐름은 역전기투석 장치의 양 끝단에 위치하는 전극 (electrode)에서의 산화/환원 작용에 의하여 전기적 흐름으로 변환하게 되며, 산화극(anode)에서 발생된 전자가 외부회로를 통하여 환원극(cathode)로 이동 하는 과정에서 전기부하를 통해 전기적 출력을 얻 을 수 있다. 역전기투석 장치의 성능은 공급유량, 이온교환 막, 유로, 용액 농도 등과 같은 다양한 설계변수들 에 의해 영향을 받는다. Turek 과 Bandura는 유 량 변화에 따른 역전기투석 장치의 성능 변화에 대하여 보고하였다. Vermaas 등은 유로 두께를 변화시켜 가며 역전기투석 장치의 성능을 평가하 였고, 유로 두께가 감소할 때 내부저항의 감소로 인하여 출력이 증가하는 것을 보였다. Dlugolecki 등은 유로에 삽입되는 스페이서로 인한 내부저 항 증가를 줄이기 위하여 이온이 이동이 가능한 스페이서를 적용하였고, 이온이 이동 가능한 스페 이서에서 역전기투석 장치의 출력이 증가하는 결 과를 얻었다. Guler 등에서는 다양한 상용 이온 교환막을 이용하여 역전기투석 장치의 성능을 평 가하였다. Kim 등에서는 비싼 이온교환막을 대 Fig. 1 Schematic illustration of the RED device 체하는 기술로 나노채널을 적용하는 연구를 수행 하였고, 나노채널에서 기존 이온교환막보다 상당 히 높은 출력밀도를 발생하였다. 그러나 대부분의 역전기투석 장치에 대한 연구에서 농도는 해수와 강물 기준으로 고정한 상태에서 진행이 되고 있으 며 농도 차이 발생을 위해 이용 가능한 다양한 공 급원에 대한 평가는 이뤄지지 않았다. 본 연구에서는 위와 같은 점에 착안하여, 폐수 (wastewater), 기수(brackish water), 브라인(brine)과 같은 다양한 농도 공급원의 조합에 대한 역전기투 석 장치의 성능을 평가하였다.

Numerical Investigation of Flow Structures near Various Nozzle Exit Geometries of the Air Bearing

To investigate pressure distributions on the shaft surface of the air bearing, the commercial CFD software was employed to study three different nozzle geometries to improve the nozzle performance: general drill-shaped, matched cube-shaped and trimmed exit nozzles. Under the influence of stagnation point, the maximum pressure was observed at the center of shaft surface for all cases. Owing to the blocking effect of a fine gap between the shaft surface and the nozzle exit, the drill-shaped nozzle has the rapid local pressure increase near the nozzle exit corner, generating the ring vortex in the radial direction within pressure ratio of 6.92, and its pressure becomes negative in a certain range of downstream. In comparison, the contoured nozzle showed a local pressure increase in the measured range of pressure ratios, but a negative pressure appeared within the pressure ratio of about 10. The trimmed nozzle was seemed to extend the high pressure zone near the stagnation point in the radial direction substantially, and no negative pressure was appeared in the whole range. Based on these observations, it is found that trimming nozzle exit becomes more effective for improving the performance than modifying the nozzle inside contour.
