The Human Microbiota

The research in human microbiota performed at Guelph is crucial to finding treatment and cures for numerous conditions, including chronic clostridium difficile (C. difficile) inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, obesity, colorectal cancer and regressive autism. The Robogut has already played a key role by creating a synthetic stool substitute for use in fecal transplants to cure patients with C. difficile.

Elsie Widdowson: The Remarkable Life of a Pioneering Nutrition Research Scientist, but an Unsung Dietitian

Elsie M. Widdowson CH, CBE, FRS, PhD (1906–2000), was one of the outstanding nutrition scientists of the 20th century. It is less well appreciated that she trained in dietetics after her earlier training in chemistry. Her original work on carbohydrates in fruits led to the most comprehensive food composition tables ever produced. She and her longtime colleague, Professor Robert McCance, also tested the food rations that might be needed in the United Kingdom during World War II to ensure that the British population maintained nutritional status. Elsie’s interest in human welfare led her to study the diets of children in post-war Germany. There, she showed the importance of “tender loving care” as well as nutritional adequacy for the normal growth of children. Although McCance and Widdowson’s Food Tables are known worldwide, Elsie’s other major contributions to dietetics deserve greater recognition than they have received so far. This article, therefore, sets out to highlight just some of the contributions made by this remarkable woman.

Highlights from Elsie Widdowson’s Personal Diary of Her Meetings With Early US Nutrition Pioneers in 1936

During 3 months in 1936, a young Dr Elsie Widdowson undertook a trip to the United States to discuss mutual research interests with colleagues there. This article picks out highlights from Elsie’s personal diary, focusing on the contributions her US colleagues were making to the study and practice of dietetics and to nutrition research. Virtually all her meetings were with women who were pioneers in the new science of nutrition 80 years ago. Elsie was just a beginner, but they treated her with great kindness, and they made a deep impression on her. In this way, they helped Elsie on her way to becoming one of the greatest woman scientists in the 20th century.
