Abstract Upon irradiation with visible light the environmental pollutants 1,6-, 1,8- and 4,5-pyrenedione are reduced to the corresponding dihydroxypyrenes, while 4,5-pyrenedione undergoes photoaddition reactions with alkenes and sulfur dioxide.
