Color subpixel rendering is enhanced by co-optimizing the color subpixel architecture and algorithms with respect to human vision, resulting in the PenTile Matrix™ subpixel architecture to double the addressability and the MTF limit in both horizontal and vertical axes while reducing driver count. Results of prototype AMLCD panels demonstrate improved text and full color image quality.

High-pixel-density displays are now under development to meet the needs of next-generation mobile devices; methods to more efficiently build such displays are described. Displays based on subpixel rendering and RGBW technologies, known as PenTile Matrix™ RGBW, are shown to offer the best approach to meeting the demanding requirements of low manufacturing cost, high brightness, and low power.

We have developed an 11.6” full high definition FHD, 1920* 1080 product with PenTile RGBW™ L6W pixel structure for notebook applications. with the increase of aperture ratio due to the reduced number of subpixels and additional white subpixel, this new product has approximately twice the brightness of comparable conventional RGB stripe products. The crosstalk that appeared when displaying a single colored pattern, which is an intrinsic problem for an even modulo subpixel repeat cell, was solved by means of a Vest feedback design. Furthermore, subpixel rendering SPR and dynamic backlight control DBLC algorithm gives us a cost effective, low power and high brightness solution.

The conversion of tri-vectored color values to quad-vectors creates a degree of freedom that may be used to optimize color reproduction and image reconstruction. Global selection from among possible RGBW metamers improves image texture. Local selection from among possible metamers improves subpixel rendering. Combining RGBW with Dynamic Back Light Control eliminates Out-of-Gamut colors while still maintaining power reduction benefits of RGBW. Local mapping vs. global mapping of Out-of-Gamut colors improves brightness without sacrificing local luminance contrast for more aggressive power savings modes.
