A fast variable-length decoder with optimized lookup tables on FPGA [MPEG applications]

Chen Guanghua; Ma Shiwei; Li Min; Cao Jia-lin; Shao Yong

A novel high performance variable-length code (VLC) decoder for MPEG applications is proposed. It has higher throughput and requires smaller memory resources by group matching and lookup table optimization. Group matching is developed to simplify matching procedure and reduce the process time. Group recombination, group decomposition and group properties are applied to optimize the lookup tables, which removes the redundant bits and reduces the implementation complexity. This decoder is implemented on FPGA and the throughput is about 55 Msymbols/s at 55 MHz clock rate.

Influence of layout parameters on snapback characteristic for a gate-grounded NMOS device in 0.13-μm silicide CMOS technology

Jiang Yuxi; Li Jiao; Ran Feng; Cao Jia-lin; Yang Dianxiong

Gate-grounded NMOS (GGNMOS) devices with different device dimensions and layout floorplans have been designed and fabricated in 0.13-μm silicide CMOS technology. The snapback characteristics of these GGNMOS devices are measured using the transmission line pulsing (TLP) measurement technique. The relationships between snapback parameters and layout parameters are shown and analyzed. A TCAD device simulator is used to explain these relationships. From these results, the circuit designer can predict the behavior of the GGNMOS devices under high ESD current stress, and design area-efficient ESD protection circuits to sustain the required ESD level. Optimized layout rules for ESD protection in 0.13-μm silicide CMOS technology are also presented.

Design of a high performance microcontroller

Hu Yue-li; Cao Jia-lin; Ran Feng; Liang Zhi-jian

A high performance 8-bit microcontroller, which shares the same instruction set with the standard Intel 8051, is presented in this paper. In system architecture, four-clock period per machine cycle architecture, Harvard architecture and pre-fetching instruction method are adopted to improve MCUs power efficiency. In CPU architecture, ALU of purely combinational circuits, Independent multiplier and divider module, multi-clocks architectures and hardwired control unit are adopted to get high speed. Considering power consumption, gating clock method is used to reduce the power consumption. Mapped in CSMC06 0.6/spl mu/m CMOS technology, this MCU is successfully synthesized and simulated with EDA tools and implemented in FPGA of Alteras APEX20KE. As an IP core, the MCU core can be conveniently involved in SOC.

Design of 16MB Addressing Spaces in an MCU Based on the MCS-51 Structure

Jing Wei-liang; Hu Yue-li; Cao Jia-lin

This paper presents the design of 16M-byte addressing spaces in an MCU (micro-control unit) based on the structure of MCS-51. Both external data and program storage capacities are enlarged from 64K to 16M bytes without the increment of time-multiplexed address buses and the change of the whole instruction set. Thereby, a large number of data and programs with complex algorithms can be processed and run on this MCU. After the successful simulation at the front end, practical experiments made on a Nios development board verify that the design is correct. Furthermore, the design gains good effects in practical applications and enables the MCU to control an image processing system with much more than 64KB programs and tremendous data

Fast Computation of Wigner-Ville Distribution

Cao Jia-lin; Chen Guanghua

The paper proposes a new method for computation of the Wigner-Ville distribution(WVD) taking account of the conjugate symmetry of the WVD kernel function and the periodicity and symmetry of the trigonometric function. The method transfers the computation of WVD into real field from complex field to remove the redundancies in the fast Fourier transform(FFT) computation. The realization of fast cosine operation and fast sine operation considerably reduces the computation cost. Theoretical analysis shows that the algorithm provided in the paper is much more advantageous than the existed ones.

A Heuristic Particle Swarm Optimization Method and its Application in Power Network Planning

Fu Yang; Xu Zili; Hu Rong; Cao Jia-lin

A heuristic particle swarm optimization (HPSO) is constructed based on the particle swarm optimization with passive congregation (PSOPC) and a harmony search (HS) scheme. According to the characters of power network planning, the HPSO algorithm handles the variable constraints using a ldquofly-back mechanismrdquo method, and then a HS scheme deals with the planning-problem constraints, therefore the particles can be kept in feasible field during the whole iteration procedure. Passive congregation is introduced in HPSO to improve particlepsilas evolutionism and its free search ability. The correctness of the proposed method is verified by the example of the 18-bus system, and the result shows that the HPSO algorithm relatively has good convergence in contrast to basic PSO and PSOPC.

Modified Interval DEA Method for Economic Evaluation of Distribution Network

Fu Yang; Liu Lujie; Hu Rong; Cao Jia-lin

There are many uncertainty factors which influence the economic evaluation of distribution network. Traditionally, the probability analysis method and fuzzy mathematics method are adopted for solving the uncertainty problem in the analysis of economic evaluation. However, it is difficult to obtain the membership functions and probability distribution functions of uncertainty factors. In this paper, a new solution, namely a modified DEA model which is applied to the economic evaluation of distribution network is studied and is extended to the interval case, in order to deal with uncertainty. A whole process of modified interval DEA is demonstrated step by step. To indicate the proposed method, a worked example is performed on a test economic evaluation of distribution network. The result confirms that modified interval DEA method can get more discriminative efficient DMU, in an unprecedented flexible manner, much more useful information than traditional analysis. It provides an efficient and flexible evaluation tool for the power system planning, engineering and operations.

The Wigner-Ville Distribution and the Cross Wigner-Ville Distribution of Noisy Signals

Chen Guanghua; Ma Shiwei; Qin Tinghao; Wang Jian; Cao Jia-lin

The Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) and the cross Wigner-Ville distribution (XWVD) have been shown to be efficient in the estimation of instantaneous frequency (IF). But the statistical result of the IF estimation from XWVD peak is much better than using WVD peak. The reason is given in the paper from a statistical point of view. Theoretical studies show that XWVD of the analyzed signal can be estimated from XWVD of the noise-contaminated signal. The estimation is unbiased, and the variance is equal to that of noise. In this case, WVD cannot be estimated from WVD of the noise-contaminated signal. Therefore higher SNR is required when WVD is used to analyze signals

Cao Wei; Yang Daopei; Cao Jia-lin; Wang Yongzhi; Yan Yuxing

This paper proposes an effective DC voltage and power sharing droop control structure for DC microgrid based on public bus voltage feedback signal. Firstly, the impact of the line resistance on power sharing among droop controlled distributed generators is analyzed and the reason why the line resistance cannot be ignored is presented. Then, an improved droop control is proposed. The simulation test based on MATLAB/Simulink was implemented to demonstrate the proposed approach.
