The objectives of this study were: a) to evaluate indicators of physical fitness in children and adolescents according to chronological age and gender; b) to classify their performance using the PROESP-BR normative tables. A total of 3145 randomly selected school children (1590 boys and 1555 girls), ranging in age from 7 to 16 years, were submitted to the following tests: distance covered in a 9-minute run, standing long jump test, medicine-ball throw, and 60-s situp test to measure abdominal muscle endurance. Significant differences were observed between genders at all chronological ages and also between boys of different chronological ages. In girls, no significant differences were observed between chronological ages, with performance tending to stabilize at 11/12 years of age. Classification of the participants according to the PROESP-BR normative tables showed that more than 50% of all subjects were below the 40th percentile in all tests, especially girls. The same tendency was observed when compared to other Brazilian studies. Considering mean values, it can be concluded that the school children studied, especially girls, presented a low level of physical fitness, thus indicating the need for health promotion programs in the midwest region of Sao Paulo City addressing physical activity.

This study explores an activist approach for co-creating a prototype pedagogical model of sport for working with boys from socially vulnerable backgrounds. This paper addresses the key features that emerged when we identified what facilitated and hindered the boys’ engagement in sport. This study was an activist research project that was conducted between July 2013 and December 2013 in a soccer program in a socially and economically disadvantaged neighborhood in Brazil. The lead author, supervised by the second author, worked with a soccer class of 17 boys between ages 13 and 15, 4 coaches, a pedagogical coordinator and a social worker. Multiple sources of data were collected, including 38 field journal/observations and audio records of: 18 youth work sessions, 16 coaches’ work sessions and 3 combined coaches and youth work sessions. In addition, the first and second author had 36 90-minute debriefing and planning sessions. By using an activist approach, three features were identified as being essential: an ethic of care, an attentiveness to the community and a community of sport. Findings suggest that it is possible to use sport as a cultural asset to benefit youth from socially vulnerable backgrounds by offering them a place where they can feel protected and dream about possible futures.

The current research aims to analyze and characterize the conditions of the school sports in the elementary schools in the Municipality of Santos, focusing on: a) the academic and professional experience of teachers/coaches; b) the condition of facilities and equipment. By using questionnaires with open and closed questions for teachers/coaches (n=85) in state, municipal and private schools, there were differences among teachers/coaches of the three school systems in relation to age, experience, training and updating. Regardless of the origin of the school, most professionals are male and carry out other activities beyond school sports. The conditions of use and maintenance of facilities and materials in public schools are worse than those described in private schools. It is hoped that the results contribute to a better utilization of the training potential of school sports, and thus encourage and promote future discussions about programs of sports initiation in this context.
