UNLABELLED Down syndrome is caused by a trisomy of chromosome 21 and is associated with central auditory processing deficit, learning disability and, probably, early-onset Alzheimers disease. AIM To evaluate the latencies and amplitudes of evoked late auditory potential related to P300 events and their changes in young adults with Downs syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS Prospective case study. P300 test latency and amplitudes were evaluated in 17 individuals with Downs syndrome and 34 healthy individuals. RESULTS The P300 latency (N1, P2, N2 and P3) was longer and the N2-P3 amplitude was lower in individuals with Down syndrome when compared to those in the control group. CONCLUSION In young adults with Down syndrome, N1, P2, N2 and P3 latencies of late auditory evoked potential related to P300 events were prolonged, and N2 - P3 amplitudes were significantly reduced, suggesting integration impairment between the auditory association area and cortical and subcortical areas of the central nervous system.

The low level laser is widely used in Dentistry, in particular, to decrease pain and increase the speed of tooth movement. This study was to perform a systematic literature search to investigate the effectiveness of low level laser and low energy density therapy of the induced tooth movement. This research was performed following the PRISMA instructions and was registered in the PROSPERO. The articles were searched in six electronic databases, with no date and language restriction. Only randomized clinical trials were selected. Articles that did not use the extraction of first premolars as orthodontic planning were excluded, as well as articles using high energy density laser therapy. The articles were assessed for risk of bias and individual quality. The results were analyzed using meta-analysis, using randomized effect. The initial sample consisted of 161 articles. Six articles remained eligible for qualitative analysis and five for quantitative analysis. According to the individual quality, most articles were classified as high quality. Three articles detected statistically significant differences in induced movement by comparing the orthodontic movement between the experimental and control groups. For the maxilla, there was a statistically significant influence of the laser in three months and, for the mandible, in one month. It may be concluded that there is no evidence that laser therapy can accelerate the induced tooth movement.

Purpose: to analyze the hearing, language, motor and social skills of children and propose a screening of child development. Methods: 129 preschool children of both sexes, aged between three and six years old, enrolled in educational institutions and 25 teachers of kindergarten from public and private institutions, with no history of hearing disorders, with type A tympanometric curves and the presence of acoustic reflexes participated. For the children, the neuropsychomotor test, Denver II, and the evaluation of sound localization and temporal ordination of three verbal and non-verbal sounds were applied. For the educators responsible for the children, the Scale of Auditory Behaviors (SAB), was used. Results: most participants with normal SAB presented hearing abilities or standard Denver II; while in the amended SAB group, most participants presented alterations in Denver II or in the auditory abilities tests. It was found, also, that part of the children with standard Denver II were pointed, by the educators, as misbehaving in SAB. Conclusion: the combination of the findings of the Denver II, hearing tests of sound localization and temporal ordination and the SAB Scale is useful in the characterization of child development and, thus, the use of these three instruments for screening in this age group is recommended.

Systemic sclerosis is a rare, progressive of unknown etiology and variable evolution, autoimmune rheumatic connective tissue disease. It reaches vital organs and perioral tissues, causing limitation of mouth opening, hypertonia of the phonoarticulatory organs, face with the appearance of a mask, difficulty in chewing and swallowing. Aiming to compare the pre and post miofuncional orofacial intervention in subjects with systemic sclerosis, it was performed a quali quantitative exploratory clinical study in the Rheumatology department of the University Hospital and in the School Clinic of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences of the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), from July/2012 to December/2013. The sample consisted of five individuals, of both genders, aged between 24 and 60 years and with confirmed medical diagnosis of that condition. The subjects underwent through evaluation by MBGR protocol and 36 sessions of speech therapy (myofunctional and myotheray). At the end, the initial and final results were compared from the clinical indicators worked. After analyzing the results obtained, improvements in all aspects were observed. The previous Speech Therapy evaluation revealed restriction of mouth opening in all subjects and the final results presented gains between 5.3 and 14.2mm of opening (average: 9.26). Regarding muscle tonus, mobility of the phonoarticulatory organs and orofacial dormancy, improvements and evidences of adequacy of oral functions were observed. It can be concluded that, although some patients still show changes, the rehabilitation promoted significant improvements in the clinical condition and quality of life of the individuals of the study group.
