ABSTRACT Purpose: to understand and discuss the conceptions of information, education and health communication (IEC) of speech therapists who coordinated and developed the Voice Campaigns in Brasilia, in the years 2009 and 2010. Methods: the study used a qualitative approach in which semi-structured questions were used to collect data. The data analysis followed the steps of content analysis and the discussion was based on information, education and health communication theories. Results: it showed that, health Information is seen only as the description of the vocal tract functions and not as data that could be helpful triggers for planning and implementing effective action for the Voice campaigns; the Health Education is seen as a transference of information and not as a collective process with regards to the needed care for vocal and well-being; and Communication in health is limited to press media and not as a strategy for construction of a communication based on the population’s knowledge about the subject.

Methods: 21 children aged 3 to 6 years participated and were divided into three groups: Group 1 – children with Autism Spectrum Disorder; Group 2 – children with language delay; Group 3 – children with typical language development. Three judges performed a subjective evaluation of the emissive prosody (characterization of pitch, loudness, sentence stress, stressed syllable and others) of the children during interaction time (video recording and use of specific protocols). The equality of proportions test was applied for group comparison (α=0.01). Results: the prevalence of a history of delay for speaking the first words was high in Groups 1 and 2. Regarding the prosodic characteristics, all Group 1 children had difficulties in the use of the stressed syllable, and some in the accentuation of the sentence. On the other hand, no Group 3 children showed these changes and few Group 2 children presented excessively stressed syllable. Conclusion: inappropriate stressing of words seems to be one of the features in the differential diagnosis of verbal children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the association between burnout syndrome and the likely presence of voice disorders among teachers from a public elementary school in the country town of Sergipe. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study in which 208 teachers completed the following questionnaires: the Condition of Vocal Production-Teacher (CPV-P), the Screening Index for Voice Disorder (SIVD), and the Burnout Syndrome Evaluation Questionnaire (CESQT). RESULTS Of the 208 teachers, 76.9% were women, 77.9% came from rural areas, and 64.4% were likely to have a voice disorder. Teachers with a career length of over 15 years were almost twice as likely to have a voice disorder. Of the symptoms listed in the SIVD, the following were most prevalent: dry throat (88.1%), hoarseness (84.4%), and fatigue when speaking (82.1%). Among the burnout subscales, psychic exhaustion was the most common (30.3%). Analyses revealed that probable voice disorder was associated with psychic exhaustion with an odds ratio of 1.78 (P <0.001, χ2 = 84.1%). Teachers with positive scores on two to four burnout subscales had an odds ratio of 4.01 (P = 0.013, χ2 = 86.2%) for a probable voice disorder compared with those with positive scores on zero to one subscale. CONCLUSIONS The present results confirmed that burnout syndrome was associated with the presence of a probable voice disorder.

Methods: cognitive screening was carried out by the Mini Mental State Examination (MEM) and the Verbal Fluency Test, semantics (FVS) and phonological (FVF) in 25 adults and elderly with no cognitive changes complaints admitted in an internal medicine ward. For statistical analyses, the one-way Anova, followed by post hoc Tukey, the bivariate Person correlation and the nonparametric Fisher’s tests were used. Results: a high frequency of cognitive impairment and a moderate correlation among the three tests applied were verified. The educational factor influenced the results of the MEM, the FVF and FVS tests, while the age factor significantly influenced the evidence of MEM and FVS. Conclusion: the data demonstrated that cognitive screening in hospitalized patients without related complaints is important, and that age and education are paramount factors in cognitive performance.

Purpose To correlate self-reporting of voice disorders with habits that impact voice production and situations of violence experienced by teachers. Methods The study involved 41 elementary-school teachers of rural and urban areas. Two instruments were used for data collection: The Vocal Production Condition - Teacher (CPV-P) questionnaire and the Screening Index for Voice Disorders - ITDV. The chi-square test was used to verify association among variables with a significance level of 5%. Results The sample consisted of 8 men and 33 women aged 25-66 years with a median of 39 years. Regarding vocal habits, 33 people (80.5%) mentioned the screaming as usual practice, 40 people (97.5%) declared they talk a lot. As for voice care, 31 people (73.1%) reported drinking water while using their voice. As for the ITDV total score, 30 teachers (73.1%) were above the score threshold set for predisposition to vocal disorders. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between female participants and complaint of graffiti writings as a type of violence. No significant correlation between the ITDV results with gender and the ITDV with forms of violence evaluated in the study was indicated. Conclusion Self-reporting of voice disorders showed no significant relationship with acts of violence. However, analysis of the context of violence in schools and vocal problems are issues worthy of attention, particularly the observed naturalization of gender inssues, which is seldom problematized.

Purpose: to describe the hospital care provided to patients with laryngeal cancer in the Northeast of Brazil and the possibilities of surgical intervention and speech rehabilitation funded by Brazils unified health system (SUS). Methods: this is a descriptive epidemiological study, which relied on secondary data obtained by searching the DATASUS database for information referring to the period between January 2008 and December 2012. Results: the study showed an increase in the number of cases of laryngeal cancer over the years, a predominance of male patients, and a larger number of hospitalizations; it also evidenced that the partial laryngectomy is the most frequent medical procedure, and that the state of Pernambuco has the largest number of speech therapists associated with the SUS. Conclusion: the provision of hospital care to patients with laryngeal cancer contemplates strategies such as surgical procedures and speech rehabilitation. This care should include aspects associated with disease prevention, as health information conveyed by means of educational programs may contribute to the early diagnosis and treatment of the illness.

PURPOSE To analyze the television reports on the World Voice Day transmitted by Globo(r) TV. METHOD We researched television reports broadcasted by Globo(r) Network in regional television news programs from March 15 to April 20, 2013. For the data analysis, the Document Analysis technique was used. The analyzed variables were the following: location, broadcasting period, duration, interviewed professional, mention of multiprofessional work, orientation to the population, and the interview approach (health promotion or disease prevention). Through statistical analysis, the interview approach was considered the outcome and associated with the other variables. RESULTS On the regions where there are news programs for the researched TV station, the majority made reports about the Voice Campaign. Among these, we discovered that the five regions of Brazil were contemplated, in the morning/afternoon periods, with medium duration of 5.3 minutes. The presence of the speech-language pathologist was observed in greater numbers of the interviews, as also the emphasis on the importance of a multiprofessional work. Regarding the content presented, the interviewees focused on diseases caused by habits that impair the voice, with orientation to the public about what negatively interferes in the vocal well-being. CONCLUSION The approach of the interviews was not, in the majority of times, of the same nature (promoting the vocal well-being or preventing voice disorder), and the interprofessional practice is still seen less frequently as a possible work strategy.
