Mobile Learning in Portuguese Universities: Are Professors Ready?

Fernando Moreira; Carla Santos Pereira; Natércia Durão; Maria João Ferreira

Mobile technology is increasingly an element to be considered in the new paradigm in education in general, and in higher education in particular. In addition, computers and information technology have increased educational opportunities and have opened the way to new teaching methods. Due to this, several concepts from the e-learning, m-learning and u-learning appeared. Therefore, it is critical to understand whether users (students and professors) are receptive and aware to adapt to this new paradigm before deciding to implement teaching-learning methods based on mobile technology. In this context, the aim of this paper is to investigate the perception of professors in higher education, the area of technology in Portugal in relation to m-learning, and to identify the needs of professors as they relate to mobile technologies and how they can be used to promote student’s engagement inside and outside of the classroom.

Fernando Moreira; Maria João Ferreira; Carla Santos Pereira; Natércia Durão

Collaborative learning has been getting more importance in educational environment as one type of mobile learning application. In this learning environment there are a shift of learning approach, i.e. in a traditional approach the focus is on the teacher and in static and repetitive contents, oppositely with a collaborative learning the learn is centered in the students where they have a critical apprehension of contents that goes beyond the classroom, students could learning in different places. Learning supported by mobile technologies is becoming a new approach towards education, and it is single in the way that offers opportunities to learn anywhere and anytime. This paper introduces the foundations of collaborative learning supported by mobile technologies as well as presenting and analysing the evolution of collaborative learning supported by mobile devices in Portuguese (North region) Higher Education Institutions between 2009/2010 and 2014/2015.

Fernando Moreira; Carla Santos Pereira; Natércia Durão; Maria João Ferreira

Abstract Mobile technology is increasingly an element to be considered a paradigm that is changing in education in general, and in higher education in particular. In addition, computers and information technology have increased educational opportunities and have opened the way to new teaching/learning approaches. Due to this, several concepts from the e-learning, m-learning and u-learning appeared. Therefore, it is critical to understand whether users (students and professors) are receptive and aware to adapt to this new paradigm before deciding to implement teaching learning methods based on mobile technology. Thus, it is necessary to make a fundamental question “ How do professors percept m-leaning ?” In this context, the aim of this paper is to investigate the perception of higher education professors in Portugal and Spain (Iberian Peninsula) regarding the m-learning, and to identify the needs of professors as they relate to mobile technologies and how they can be used to promote student’s engagement inside and outside of the classroom. The main results obtained allow us to conclude that the majority of Iberian Peninsula professors have knowledge on how to perform the most trivial task with mobile devices and a high results about the utilization of both augmented reality and gamification applications.

Fernando Moreira; Natércia Durão; Carla Santos Pereira; Maria João Ferreira

The higher education provided by universities plays a fundamental role in transforming society in all its dimensions, namely teaching and educational management. The combination of higher education and the increase of mobile technologies (one of the pillars of digital transformation) leads to an increase in training opportunities and the development of new teaching methods. Due to this, several concepts from the e-learning, m-learning to u-learning appeared. Therefore, it is critical to understand whether users (students and professors) are receptive and aware to adapt to this new paradigm before deciding to implement teaching-learning methods based on mobile technology. In this context, the aim of this paper is to investigate the perception if the South American universities professors are using Mobile Learning with gamification and augmented reality apps and how they can be used to promote student’s engagement inside and outside of the classroom, in special to prepare the students for digital transformation.
