The paper describes how a telecom operator can leverage on Web services to provide integrated services which span over several technologies. In addition, it addresses how SIP protocol (session initiation protocol) can be used along with Web service technologies to enable a new set of integrated IT and Telco services. The paper highlights the benefits and drawbacks of application of Web service paradigm in a Telco environment and the results of research and prototyping activities carried out within Telecom Italia Lab (the R&D of Telecom Italia group).

Mobile devices are equipped with increasing processing power and sensing capabilities, and mobile services can benefit from these features to provide a more personalized and context-aware experience to final users. To efficiently collect and deliver context information, a proper architecture is required, where heterogeneous context information can be processed to provide higher-level context information, context data are represented uniformly, and applications can process context data with high-level queries. This paper fulfils this goal of interoperability and domain independence by defining a framework for context data management relying on open standards (XMPP and REST), acting as an enabler for third-party context-aware applications; other main novelties of our work are the definition of a ContextML for standard context data representation, and a Context Query Language (CQL) to access context information based on high-level data filtering.

Information derived from wearable sensors, such as illness/fall alarms, can be enhanced with context information to provide advanced health care and assisted living applications. In this paper we describe an architecture that combines sensor and context data into a telecommunication service to detect emergency situations and generate alarm calls according to users preferences and contacts geographic proximity.

The Webs evolution into a Semantic Web and the continuous increase in the amount of data published as linked data open up new opportunities for annotation and categorization systems to reuse these data as semantic knowledge bases. Accordingly, information extraction systems use linked data to exploit semantic knowledge bases, which can be interconnected and structured to increase the precision and recall of annotation and categorization mechanisms. TellMeFirst classifies and enriches textual documents written in English and Italian. Although various works present solutions for text annotation and classification, this article describes and studies the use case of a telecommunications operator that has adopted TellMeFirst to add value to two services available to its users: FriendTV and Society.

Analysis of trending topics in social networks, based both on textual and multimedia content, can be used by content providers to measure the buzz around their channels, and even to create new material based on the current memes propagating across Twitter, Google+, Facebook etc. STAMAT is a framework designed to provide a set of tools for social media analysis, and to create, through content curation, personalized web sites and magazines.

This article describes the TILAB view about the fixed mobile convergence. Starting from the different perspectives of all the possible actors in the Telecommunication arena, we introduce all the possible level of convergence and present the TILAB experience about the Service Creation Layer. This is considered a key point to optimize the exploitation of all the opportunities coming from the new categories of services which can be developed at the convergence of the mobile and the fixed networks.
