Nowadays, the development of services that span over both the Internet and telephony networks is driving significant efforts towards the integration of services offered by IT providers with telecom operators ones. Web services have often been recommended for providing, composing and realizing telecom services but introducing them means facing up with several challenges. This work sharpens benefits and drawbacks of Web service applications within a telecom environment focusing in particular on JAIN SLEE architecture, which defines a standard environment targeted at communication-based applications

Meshing up telecommunication and IT resources seems to be the real challenge for supporting the evolution towards the next generation of Web Services. In telecom world, JAIN-SLEE (JAIN Service Logic Execution Environment) is an emerging standard specification for Java service platforms targeted to host value added services, composed of telecom and IT services. In this paper we describe StarSLEE platform which extends JAIN-SLEE in order to compose JAIN-SLEE services with Web services and the StarSCE service creation environment which allows exporting value added services as communication web services, and we analyze open issues that must be addressed to introduce Web Services in new telecom service platforms.

The paper describes how a telecom operator can leverage on Web services to provide integrated services which span over several technologies. In addition, it addresses how SIP protocol (session initiation protocol) can be used along with Web service technologies to enable a new set of integrated IT and Telco services. The paper highlights the benefits and drawbacks of application of Web service paradigm in a Telco environment and the results of research and prototyping activities carried out within Telecom Italia Lab (the R&D of Telecom Italia group).

Mass-market users exploit remote storage solutions and centralized online social network (OSN) services to share user-generated content. Although these solutions are widely adopted, they introduce several issues related to user content/metadata migration on server-side components managed by third-party providers. The authors propose a middleware solution to support social-driven peer-to-peer content sharing while preserving content ownership. A prototype demonstrates the proposals feasibility in terms of both performance results and easy integration with off-the-shelf devices using unmodified HTTP/UPnP protocols.

Nowadays Social Networking phenomenon is gaining a significant momentum. Social Networks users are disclosing a lot of information about their relationships, profiles, preferences and interests. In this paper we describe the achievement of a context Aware platform which leverages a users Social graph to provide pervasive computing applications based on context awareness. The platforms goal is to serve APIs to create novel Social Context Aware services.

A major research challenge in the IT domain nowadays is to enable new experiences by building intelligent spaces around users, enhanced by pervasive computing services. The European FP7 Project PERSIST (PERsonal Self-Improving SmarT spaces) is investigating a novel approach to meet this challenge. PERSIST aims to define an ecosystem on top of which novel pervasive services can be built. This paper explains the notion of a Personal Smart Space (PSS), provides a reference case study and describes some aspects of how PSSs might operate. PERSIST is also researching on new paradigms for harmonizing p2p functionalities with network services. We present a case study and bring into focus the main challenges We are mastering for pursuing a middleware to support PSSs management and mutual interaction.

In this paper a SOA inspired context-aware platform for enabling context-aware Telecom services is presented. The SOA related components are highlighted and the platforms integration into a Telecom providers service architecture is described -- pointing out challenges in terms of protocols and semantic interoperability. An example application bridging the gap between data collected through a users mobile phone and a web based portal in order to provide a Virtual Location Application through our platform is presented.
