ABSTRACT If, deluded by general literary history, we only value what is ethical and responsible in classical Portuguese satire, forgetting that it can also contain individual arbitrariness aimed at the destruction of an object, we will miss the moments when, as in medieval satire, the factor of constitution seems to be the ruthless and immoral personalization of criticism of persons, institutions, or entities. The aesthetics of moderation ends up promoting a subtly saturated and concrete language that seems to pursue the annulment of the other rather than a corrective social function. In Mannerism we find the most aesthetically elaborate examples of satire that challenges destiny or God in relation to the evils that fall upon an impotent but insubstantial self before such sensitive questions of metaphysical morality, a satire whose classic style gives it an aesthetic dignity and textual model without exception. In this article, we will see the different paths of classic and Mannerist satire, using the works of poets such as Sá de Miranda, António Ferreira, Pêro de Andrade Caminha, André Falcão de Resende, and Fernão Rodrigues Lobo Soropita.

This study deals with the cordel literature written by Manoel Monteiro, which has been published repeatedly since 1952 and with increasing regularity during the past six years. Manoel Monteiro seeks to contribute to the aesthetic and sociocultural education of sections of the Brazilian population that are less fortunate, both financially and culturally. Therefore, his poetry, consistently conscious of its status as an art and as a technique, is in large part a poetry of protest, of ideals, and of faith in human potential.

Abstract Problematic and dialectical, satire suits the poetic convictions of Gomes Leal (Lisbon, 1848–1921). This author uses the moral and ontological solitude of the ‘I’, which he deeply feels, to create an impulsive style of writing.

The lyric cancioneiros from Northern Portugal and Galicia constitute, to a great extent, a shared tradition. To affirm this is not to deny the specificity of the cancioneiro with regards to each country or region. There are certain characteristics that distinguish the cancioneiros from one another, but equally there are clear similarities between them, in form as well as in content. Their geographic proximity, their various connections, and also the political, linguistic, and cultural separation of Portugal and Galicia have given rise to the complicated relationship that has created a cancioneiro we can refer to as, to evoke the medieval lyric poetry school, Galician-Portuguese. Departing from these historical and cultural conjectures, this article aims to compare the major lines of structure and form within the cancioneiros from Northern Portugal and from Galicia. Through the comparison of poems which have circulated or are still in circulation in this geo-cultural area, we can, on the one hand, reflect upon the way in which the cancioneiro functions and, on the other hand, consider the world views of the communities from which the texts originate and which are shaped at the same time by these very texts.
