Institutionalisation of gender and diversity management in engineering education

Due to demographic changes, globalisation and increased migration processes, institutions of higher education are, in particular, assigned new responsibilities. The fight for the most qualified people demands new strategies and concepts. Technical universities that are traditionally male dominated and where women and minorities are under-represented in almost all areas are facing these challenges with an increasing urgency. For an excellent performance, these institutions need diverse people who are equally included and promoted within the educational system. With the establishment of the scientific unit ‘Integration Team – Human Resources, Gender and Diversity Management”, RWTH Aachen University is proactively dealing with these issues. The following contribution describes the institutional integration of gender and diversity management at a technical university with special emphasis on measures and activities in research and teaching, aiming at tackling the under-representation of women and minorities in science and technology.

Changing the face of STEM: the Example of Computer Science in Germany

In an initial evaluation step in order to screen a school of computer science, first year students of computer science were asked to complete a questionnaire. The results form the basis for an actual status analysis which offers a clear view on the composition of the target group, its reasons for the decision to study computer science and their expectations accompanying this choice. They lead to first hypotheses regarding the identification of gender equal indicators in this school.

Das interdisziplinare Forschungsprojekt „IGaDtools4MINT – Integration von Gender and Diversity in MINT-Studiengangen an Hochschulen“ arbeitet vor dem Hintergrund des geringen Frauenanteils sowie des Anteils an weiteren bisher unterreprasentierten Studierendengruppen in der Informatik und den anderen MINT-Fachern an einem koharenten Gesamtkonzept, um mittelfristig die Studierendenanteile der beschriebenen Gruppen zu erhohen und gleichzeitig die Abbruchquoten zu senken.

Sozial verantwortliche Technikwissenschaften: der Beitrag der Geschlechterforschung für Forschung, Entwicklung und Ausbildung

Die Geschlechterforschung in den Technikwissenschaften hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten die vielfaltigen Dimensionen vergeschlechtlichter Prozesse in Forschung und Entwicklung beschrieben. Diese Erkenntnisse finden allerdings bisher nur sehr marginal Eingang in den Diskurs einer sozial verantwortlichen Technikentwicklung innerhalb der Technikwissenschaften selbst. Gleichzeitig wird auf nationaler wie internationaler Ebene die Berucksichtigung von Genderperspektiven gefordert und in den Technikwissenschaften gibt es einen regen Diskurs uber die Ausbildung von sozial verantwortlichen Ingenieur*innen. Der Beitrag zeigt auf, wie es gelingen kann, die beiden Diskurse zusammenzufuhren, um so eine sozial verantwortliche Forschung, Entwicklung und Ausbildung in den Ingenieurwissenschaften umzusetzen.
