Absorptive capacity in European manufacturing: A Delphi Study

Purpose – This paper sets out to discuss the results of a specific part of a Europe‐wide Delphi study that considers issues of absorptive capacity in European manufacturing. Owing to the importance to competitiveness of increasing innovative capabilities in manufacturing it is highly relevant to explore how a wide community of manufacturing experts experience the phenomenon of absorptive capacity and sense future developments.Design/methodology/approach – A two round Delphi method was designed in which more than 3,000 experts from 22 European countries assessed 101 statements. This paper discusses eight statements focused on the issue of absorptive capacity.Findings – The results show a general consensus about the influence of different inter‐firm relationships in acquiring external knowledge and a diversified knowledge structure for assimilating the acquired knowledge. Managing knowledge in manufacturing: results of a Delphi study in European manufacturing industry

We examine the role and importance of knowledge management in European manufacturing, based on a comprehensive Delphi survey that covers a wide range of aspects relevant for future competitiveness of European manufacturing. The importance of various knowledge management activities, their estimated time of realisation, effects on employment, competitiveness, living and working conditions and possible barriers of implementation such as the level of education and qualification, economic viability, social acceptability, technical feasibility are analysed. The results highlight the consensus about the importance of knowledge as a strategically important resource and indicate a shift from resource-based towards knowledge-based manufacturing has already started. The results reveal inconsistencies between avowed importance of knowledge management and scepticism toward some aspects that potentially foster knowledge developments. It also indicates that education emerges as frequently mentioned barrier for implementing knowledge management activities. The paper concludes with policy recommendations aimed at strengthening knowledge-based production in the European manufacturing.

Kurzfassung Die deutsche Werkzeugmaschinenindustrie nimmt auf internationalen Märkten eine Spitzenstellung ein. Die in der Regel mittelständisch geprägten Unternehmen dieser Branche zeichnen sich durch ihre Agilität aus, d.h. durch die Fähigkeit, auf Marktanforderungen flexibel und schnell zu reagieren. Angesichts komplexer werdender Marktleistungen und steigender Innovationsdynamik wird diese Fähigkeit allein nicht ausreichen, zum richtigen Zeitpunkt mit der richtigen Marktleistung präsent zu sein. Die Unternehmen müssen mehr Strategiekompetenz entwickeln, d.h. die Erfolgspotenziale von morgen frühzeitig erkennen und rechtzeitig erschließen, ohne die für den Mittelstand typische Agilität aufzugeben.

Kurzfassung Die deutsche Werkzeugmaschinenindustrie nimmt im internationalen Vergleich eine Spitzenstellung ein. Für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung und die Erhaltung dieser Führungsposition im globalen Wettbewerb ist es wichtig, neue Erfolgspotenziale frühzeitig zu identifizieren und rechtzeitig zu erschließen. Dies bezieht sich vor allem auf eine vorausschauende Planung technischer Neuerungen bei Werkzeugmaschinen, um auf kurzfristig wechselnde Kundenanforderungen angemessen reagieren zu können. Auf Grund des sich dynamisch wandelnden Umfelds und Innovationssprüngen bei unterschiedlichen Technikentwicklungen sind die Eigenschaften der Werkzeugmaschine der Zukunft und die an sie gestellten Anforderungen von komplexer Natur. Dieser Trend gewinnt zunehmend eine hohe Bedeutung sowohl für die in Deutschland ansässigen Werkzeugmaschinenhersteller als auch für deren Kunden.

Nachhaltige Arbeitsgestaltung und industrielle Kreislaufwirtschaft auf hoher Wertschöpfungsstufe

Dieser Beitrag verknupft zwei Themenstrange, die in der Regel immer noch viel zu stark voneinander getrennt diskutiert werden: die Beschaftigung mit Fragen der Arbeitsgestaltung und Arbeitsorganisation und die Analyse und Entwicklung von betrieblichen Produktions- und Produktkonzepten fur eine zukunftsfahige Kreislaufwirtschaft. Ziel ist es aufzuzeigen, inwieweit unverkennbare Mangel in der heutigen Nutzung der Ressource Arbeit in zukunftigen Geschaftsmodellen fur Unternehmen, die auf Lebensdauerverlangerung und Nutzungsintensivierung von Produkten setzen und damit einen grosen Beitrag zu einem nachhaltigen Wirtschaften leisten, abgebaut werden konnen und welche Konflikte dabei uberwunden werden mussen.

Greening the Budget regards the fundamental cause of environmental degradation as government and market failure and proposes the use of budgets as an instrument of environmental policy to rectify this problem. The book focuses on the elements of the public budget which currently affect the environment and explores the scope for greening both revenue and expenditure through specific measures.

Performance Impacts of New Production Concepts

In the mid-1990s, the economic situation of the German investment goods sector was problematic. Macroeconomic indicators showed that incoming order levels were weak, while major concerns had arisen over the sector’s international competitiveness and the loss of industrial employment. The self-assessments of investment goods firms confirmed this discouraging picture. In the Fraunhofer ISI’s Manufacturing Innovation Survey (see appendix), one fifth of manufacturing respondents stated that they would not be able to continue to survive if their profitability remained at the present level. One third of the establishments in the survey considered their present profit level as being only sufficient to keep the business alive. Just two fifths of the respondents stated that their present profit level was satisfactory (figure 3-1).
