Tridimensional architecture of the collagen element in the arachnoid granulations in humans: a study on scanning electron microscopy

Celso Ivan Conegero; Renato Paulo Chopard

The arachnoid granulations of adult individual of both sexes were studied through scanning electron microscopy. The dura mater and arachnoid meninges of individuals were collected at the Service of Death Verification of São Paulo - USP and fixed in Karnovsky solution. After this period the material was prepared for analysis in electron microscope. Our results demonstrated that the arachnoid granulations are formed by a pedicle, body and apex, being surrounded by a capsule of connective tissue, which in turn is composed of, basically, bundles of collagen fibers that line pores of different shapes and sizes. The smaller pores are lined by tiny bundles and are located at the apical region of the granulation and the larger are lined by thicker bundles and are located at the lateral regions. In the body we verified that the bundles of collagen fibers compose a fibrous meshwork and in some regions these bundles have circular orientation, forming pores similar to those found at the region of the capsule.

The development of the nervous system is very complex and there are few studies about the organization of the brain envoltories related to the encephalus growing. Using the rat as an animal model, it was proposed to evaluate the several structural aspects of paquimeninge and leptomeninge in different ages. It was used 4 groups of different ages and processed according to the techniques of the light and transmission microscopy. It was verified that the adult rats present a higher area of collagen fibers of type I and III, if compared to the others groups. It was found that, the collagen fibers of type III occupy, in all analyzed groups, a higher area when compared to type I fibers. The results reveal that the Weigert Oxonas staining, which shows elastics, elauninics, and oxitalanics fibers, showed a statistically difference when compared to the Weigerts staining and Verhoeffs staining that show elauninics and elastics fibers, respectively. The ultra-structural aspects demonstrated the presence of many fibroblasts and mitochondria in the paquimeninge and also in the leptomeninges of the neonats and adults groups, indicating the high cellular activity and consequently, an intense formation of conjunctive tissue. As collagen fibers of type III acting on the structural maintenance of delicate and expansive tissues, the study shows that the function of the encephalic meninges are not only related to the to resistance to tractions and tensions that the encephalus is subjected. But also the function related to the distensibility of the meningeos and brain vases according to the sanguineous apport in several specific functions of the nervous system.

Indução à ingestão de álcool etílico retarda o processo de regeneração pós-fratura em rato - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v29i1.129

Kleber Fernando Pereira; Celso Ivan Conegero

The excessive ingestion of spirits cause metabolic and pathologic changes in different organic systems. In the bone it is known that alcohol causes osteoporosis, inhibits osteosynthesis and alters the metabolism of the bony cells. The present study aimed at verifying the influence of alcohol ingestion in the process of bone consolidation after fracture in rats. Twelve Wistar albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) were split in a control group (A), treated with commercial chow and water, and an experimental group (B), receiving commercial chow and sugar-cane brandy. Twenty-five days after fracture, the rats were killed and the collected material was subjected to light microscopy routine. It was observed that the bony callus was present in both groups of animals. In the regeneration region the animals from group A showed a smaller density of cartilage cells and thus a greater amount of newly-formed bone, while the animals from group B presented a larger density of cartilage cells, demonstrating a delay in the process of bone formation. According to the results obtained, we state that alcohol influences the fracture regeneration, delaying this process.
