The ischiatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, belongs both to the sacral and lumbosacral plexus in carnivores, continuing until the distal hind limb, and receives fibers from the ventral branch of the sixth and seventh lumbar nerves and the first sacral nerve. We aim to describe the distribution of the sciatic nerve in raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) and compare with data of literary domestic and wild animals. The animals are coming to collect on highways (killed by accident) and subjected to fixation in aqueous solution, 10% formaldehyde. The dissection and photographic documentation (Sony α200 camera, 10.2mpx) shows the distribution of the sciatic nerve. The ischiatic nerve of raccoon innervates the hind limb passing between the middle and deep gluteal muscles, giving off branches to the muscles of the buttock and thigh, respectively, for the gluteus medius, gluteus biceps, semimembranosus, semitendinosus, biceps femoris, twins, quadratus femoris and adductor magnus, sending the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thickness and flow to supply the skin on the lateral surface of the leg and tail, respectively. Near the middle of the thigh nerve bifurcates into the tibial and peroneal nerve. The anatomical knowledge of the pattern of nervous raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) is of fundamental importance in research to refer to the distribution of the ischiatic nerve, and show no disagreement with the corresponding data in the literature of domestic carnivores.

The development of the nervous system is very complex and there are few studies about the organization of the brain envoltories related to the encephalus growing. Using the rat as an animal model, it was proposed to evaluate the several structural aspects of paquimeninge and leptomeninge in different ages. It was used 4 groups of different ages and processed according to the techniques of the light and transmission microscopy. It was verified that the adult rats present a higher area of collagen fibers of type I and III, if compared to the others groups. It was found that, the collagen fibers of type III occupy, in all analyzed groups, a higher area when compared to type I fibers. The results reveal that the Weigert Oxonas staining, which shows elastics, elauninics, and oxitalanics fibers, showed a statistically difference when compared to the Weigerts staining and Verhoeffs staining that show elauninics and elastics fibers, respectively. The ultra-structural aspects demonstrated the presence of many fibroblasts and mitochondria in the paquimeninge and also in the leptomeninges of the neonats and adults groups, indicating the high cellular activity and consequently, an intense formation of conjunctive tissue. As collagen fibers of type III acting on the structural maintenance of delicate and expansive tissues, the study shows that the function of the encephalic meninges are not only related to the to resistance to tractions and tensions that the encephalus is subjected. But also the function related to the distensibility of the meningeos and brain vases according to the sanguineous apport in several specific functions of the nervous system.

The study aimed to describe the lung lobation of the brown brocket deer, Mazama gouazoubira. Two animal of the species, obtained postmortem by trampling on the highway, were used for the study, according to criteria of the Governing Law (1.153/95). The skin was completely removed and the animals were fixed in 10% formaldehyde. The viscera were removed and the lungs were dissected by a section of the block in the thoracic trachea and other structures of the pulmonary hilum. The lungs and bronchial tree were dissected, photographed and the images were recorded with a digital camera (Sony a200 Camera, 10.2mpx). The lungs showed themselves united by structures that penetrate the region of the pulmonary hilum, the right lung was found to be composed of the cranial lobes (segment cranial and caudal segment), middle, caudal and accessory. The left lung showed only cranial lobe (segmented into the cranial and caudal part) and caudal lobe. The bronchial tree begins emerges to the right lung one tracheal bronchus above the bifurcation of the trachea that are sequentially named right and left main bronchi, which at the level of the pulmonary hilum penetrate the left and right lungs respectively. The lungs and bronchial tree of M. gouazoubira showed the same anatomical description of other ruminants, like buffaloes, sheep and cattle.

Gisele Reisdoerferer; Kleber Fernando Pereira; Renato Paulo Chopard

This study aimed to describe the origin and distribution of the sciatic nerve in catingueiro-deer (Mazama gouazoubira). Two animals of the species, obtained post mortem by trampling on the highway, were used for the study meeting the requirements of the Governing Law (1.153/95). By dissection the skin was completely removed and the animals were fixed in aqueous 10% formaldehyde solution. Through dorsolateral access, superficial gluteal muscle, biceps femoris muscle and gluteus medius muscle were cut at their insertion and folded, to view the origin and distribution of the sciatic nerve on both sides of the animals. Images were recorded with a digital camera (Sony a200 Camera, 10.2mpx) and results were described based on Veterinary Anatomical Nomina. The source data of the sciatic nerve in both specimens showed that the nerve originates from the ventral branches of S1 and L6, and could have contribution from S2. After its emergence through the greater sciatic foramen on both the sides, the sciatic nerve supplies branches to gluteus medius muscle, gluteus deep muscle, superficial gluteal muscle, gluteobiceps muscle, biceps femoris muscle, semimembranosus muscle, semitendinosus muscle and gastrocnemius muscle. Near the mid-thigh the sciatic nerve divides into the tibial nerve and common peroneal nerve which innervate the muscles of the distal hind limb. Moreover, the cutaneous nerve flow can cause the common peroneal nerve or tibial nerve. In conclusion, in Mazama gouazoubira specimens studied, the sciatic nerve originated from the ventral branch of spinal L6 and S1, which may or may not have the contribution from S2. In its distribution stem originate the gluteal nerve, the caudal femoral cutaneous nerve and muscular branches, which together innervate the muscles gluteus medius, gluteus deep, superficial gluteal, gluteobiceps, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, adductor and gastrocnemius. Distally the sciatic nerve bifurcates into the common peroneal and tibial nerve, which innervates the distal hind limb.

Kleber Fernando Pereira; Vanessa Assis Menezes; Eugênio Gonçalves de Araújo

Sapajus libidinosus is a new World primate commonly known as capuchin monkey, geographically distributed throughout South America, has characteristics of restlessness and ability to manipulate tools to obtain food. This study aimed to describe the morphology of the dural sinuses of S. libidinosus through a comparative perspective. We used 3 adult male from the Federal University of Goias, Brazil, fixed in aqueous 10% formaldehyde. The longitudinal fissure in the brain extends deeply and divides the organ into two left right hemispheres, The frontal and parietal lobe presents relatively smooth surface, but with well-defined gyri and sulci. In the occipital lobe, however, smooth surface aspect prevails. We observed eight sinuses of the dura mater, sagittal dorsal, ventral sagittal, transverse, straight, sigmoid, basilar and temporal which corresponds generally to the descriptions of other primates as Pan, Papio and man. Furthermore, parietal sinus similar to Saimiri sciureus and absence of sinus occipital, as in Macaca mullata, were also recorded. In the capuchin monkey, intracavernous, sphenoparietal, superior petrosal and inferior petrosal sinuses, which are described in Pan, Papio and Man, were absent. Taken together, these data point to a possible grater evolutionary proximity to man of Papio and Pan as compared to Cebus.

The genus Alouatta hosts species popularly known as red-handed howler, presenting wide geographic distribution and being found in several biomes. The objective was describe the anatomy of spinal cord of Alouatta belzebul specimens, focusing on the topography of medullary cone, stressing the cervical and lumbar intumescences and cauda equina, to provide anatomical data and compare it with other species to assist in anesthetic and surgical procedures. Four animals were received for scientific research, post mortem, from the fauna rescue program of Hydroelectric Plant of Belo Monte, Para, and they were fixed in 10% formaldehyde solution. Structures such as the medullary cone, cervical and lumbar intumescence, and cauda equina were photographed (Sony α200-10.2 mpx). After thawing, we measured the specimens and observed a size of 80 to 82 cm from head to toe. After the skin and musculature were removed, it was observed that the spine of all specimens presented 7 cervical, 13 thoracic, 5 lumbar and 3 fused sacral vertebrae. The spinal cord was exposed after the removal of vertebral arches, it has 22 cm length in all animals, presenting the cervical intumescence between C3 and C6 vertebrae, with average of 2.2 cm and lumbar intumescence between T11 and T12 vertebrae, with average of 1.65 cm. The medullary cone is located between T12 and L1 vertebrae, with average of 1.5 cm, and the cauda equina between L1 and S3, with an average of 15 cm. This study has an important role as the basis for epidural anesthesia in the species.

Green iguana has arboreal and terrestrial habits. It is widely distributed in Central and South America, inhabiting several biomes in Brazil. Some researches were focused on this species, however, morphological information are still limited. With that in sight, we aimed to add data to the anatomical knowledge. Two post mortem specimen of Iguana i. iguana were acquired, donated by a scientific breeding, and dissected. To describe the muscles we refuted the skin and removed the fascias, individualizing the muscles. We identified the following muscles: pectoralis, deltoideus clavicularis, deltoideus scapularis, trapezius, latissimus dorsi, coracobrachialis brevis, coracobrachialis longus, serratus thoracis, levator scapulae, biceps brachii and triceps brachii. Some of them, like coracobrachialis brevis, present conservative anatomy, originating from the ventral surface of the coracoid and inserting onto the proximal humerus. Some, like trapezius and biceps brachii, are similar to other reptile species, trapezius takes its origin from the thoracodorsal fascia and biceps arises by two heads and inserts on the radial tuberosity. Deltoideus clavicularis and deltoideus scapularis share a common insertion tendon. Pectoralis varies its origin and divisions, however, the insertion always occur on the deltopectoral crest. Triceps brachii is comprised of four heads. Its long medial head originates via a tendinous arc, feature described only in crocodilians. We conclude that Iguana i. iguana forelimb musculature is similar to other reptiles, presenting its own characteristics that reflect its habits.

With aim to report the ontogeny of the osseous elements of the carapace in Peurodiras, 62 embryos and 43 nestlings of Podocnemis expansa were collected and submitted to the clearing and staining technique of bones and cartilages and study of serial histological slices. The carapace has mixed osseous structure of endo and exoskeleton, formed by 8 pairs of costal bones associated with ribs, 7 neural bones associated with neural arches, 11 pairs of peripheral bones, 1 nuchal, 1 pygal and 1 suprapygal. This structure begins its formation in the beginning of stage 16 with the ossification of the periosteal collar of the ribs. With exception of the peripheral bones, the other ones begin their ossification during the embrionary period. In histologic investigation it was found that the costal bones and neural bones have a close relation to the endoskeleton components, originating themselves as intramembranous expansions of the periosteal collar of the ribs and neural arches, respectively. The condensation of the mesenchyme adjacent to the periosteal collar induces the formation of spikes that grow in trabeculae permeated by fibroblasts below the dermis. The nuchal bone also ossifies in an intramembranous way, but does not show direct relation to the endoskeleton. Such information confirms those related to the other Pleurodira, mainly with Podocnemis unifilis, sometimes with conspicuous variations in the chronology of the ossification events. The formation of dermal plates in the carapace of Pleurodira and Criptodira follow the same pattern.
