ABSTRACT Stirring an equimolar mixture of ninhydrin 1 and 2-aminochromen-4-ones 2 in CH3COOH at room temperature produced 6a,11a-dihydroxy-6H-chromeno[2,3-b]indeno[2,1-d]pyrrole-11,12(6aH,11aH)-diones 3, which on heating with aromatic amines 6 in acetic acid produced 11b-hydroxy-7-N-arylimino-6H-chromeno[2,3-b]isoindolo[1,2-e]pyrrole-12,13(11bH)-diones 7. Abstract Condensates 4–6 undergo reductive dimerization with Sm in THF containing aqueous NH4Cl to produce 7–9, whereas with Zn under similar reaction condition 3–5 produce 10–12.

Chromenone-rhodamine conjugate for naked eye detection of Al3+ and Hg2+ ions in semi aqueous medium

ABSTRACT Chromenone-rhodamine conjugate 1 has been synthesized and its metal ion binding properties have been studied in CH3CN/water (3:1, v/v; 10 mM HEPES buffer; pH = 6.85). Compound 1 senses multiple metal ions such as Al3+ and Hg2+ by exhibiting turn on fluorescence and color change (colorless to pink). Al3+ and Hg2+ ions have been distinguished with the aid of tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI). While in the presence of I− the pink color of the 1.Hg2+ complex was completely discharged; under identical conditions the pink color of 1.Al3+ complex was retained. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

An unambiguous synthesis of dichromeno[2,3-b;3′,2′-e]pyridine-12,14-diones has been developed under mild conditions and their optical properties have been evaluated by studying UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements, DFT calculations and thermogravimetric analysis.
