This is the third report of an epidemiological study dealing with drugs, cigarettes, and now alcohol, amongst secondary school students in Israel. In the present report we describe general trends of alcohol use, draw socioeconomic profiles of alcohol drinkers, and investigate the relationship with cannabis use and cigarette smoking. Drinking patterns of the research population were studied during the 30 days prior to the administration of a questionnaire in order to devise a scale of their quantity of drinking in relation to a time sequence. Measures were also constructed for the drinking patterns of the family and friends of the research population. One of the overall conclusions is that a higher alcohol consumption is indicated amongst youngsters with a profile of delinquency, involvement with youth activities, personal problems and low parental control.

This paper presents personality profiles of two types of recidivist traffic offenders. One is the “anxious” traffic offender who imputes legitimacy to traffic norms, yet due to innate structural personality defects, he tends to enter into a state of anxiety, when confronted with risky traffic situations or a traffic jam. The other type is the “reckless” driver, who does not impute legitimacy to traffic norms nor to other legal norms. From this personality theory a number of hypotheses were derived and tested by means of multiple regression. Our ability to predict the number of traffic offenses suggests that similar tools may be used by the traffic authorities and traffic courts.

Summary According to the stigma theory, as formulated by the authors, deviant behavior may be the outcome of a negative identity applied to a person by his (or her) social environment. The purpose of the present study was to test this theory on prostitutes in Israel. Sixty-seven prostitutes and a comparison group of a similar size were interviewed and asked about their relationships with their families. The findings tend to confirm the hypotheses: Prostitution was associated to negative images cast by the father, to a sense of powerlessness, and to social isolation.
