Abstract US history has often served as a theme for tourism. Within southwestern Pennsylvania, a system of historical sites depicting the regions cultural and industrial heritage was formally organized in 1988. The Path of Progress included the renovation of 20 historical sites at a cost of

By 1998, the 13 sites had an annual attendance of nearly 1/2 million visitor days, with 74% coming from non-resident visitors. Regional expenditures by non-resident visitors were

Production costs for commercial-sized Populus plantations were developed from a series of research programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energys Short Rotation Woody Crops Program. Populus hybrid planted on good quality agricultural sites at a density of 2100 cuttings ha−1 was projected to yield an average of 16 Mg (OD) ha−1 yr−1. Discounted cash flow analysis of multiple rotations showed preharvest production costs of

An economic impact study of travel and tourism in southwestern Pennsylvania iden tified 25 travel-related activities and associated visitor expenditures. Purchases of antiques appeared to be understated, therefore antiquing was included as a separate recreational activity in the second year of the study. All regional expenditures made by nonresident visitors were entered into an input-output model of the region. The majority of antique shops in the region belong to four cooperatives or antiquing centers. Annual visitation totaled 278,352 for the retail antiquing trade and was evenly split among residents and nonresidents. Nonresident visitors spent an average of
