To satisfy the high quality image compression requirement, the new JPEG XR compression standard is introduced. The analysis and architecture design with VLSI architecture of JPEG XR encoder are proposed in this paper which can encode 4:4:4 1920 times 1080 high definition photo in smooth. According to the simulation results, the throughput of the proposed design can encode 44.2 M samples/sec. This design can be used for digital photography applications to achieve low computation, low storage, and high dynamical range features.

With rapid progress of sensors, display devices, and computing engines, image application exists everywhere. High quality, high compression rates of digital image and low computational cost are important factors of consumer electronics. In this paper, we proposed a 4:4:4 lossless JPEG XR encoder design. In JPEG XR encoder, entropy coding is a critical module of encoder. We proposed a well-defined timing schedule of pipeline architecture to speed up the entropy encoding, which is the most computationally intensive part in JPEG XR encoder. This design can be used for the digital photography applications to achieve the low complexity of computation, low storage, and high dynamic range.

Chia-Ho Pan; I-Hsien Lee; Sheng-Chieh Huang; Chung-Jr Lian; Liang-Gee Chen

When transmitting video over a heterogeneous network, it is required to satisfy the different constraints due to the preferences and equipment selections of different users. Scalable video coding is one of the solutions to serve this problem. More than one video parameters include spatial frame size, temporal frame rate, and visual quality resolution are utilized to provide better scalability in scalable video coding scheme. It is difficult to find the relationship between the various video parameter settings and user preferences. In this paper, we propose a quality-of-experience video adaptor applied on scalable video applications. This adaptor adjusts video parameters for each user appropriately and achieves a better visual quality by using negligible computation. The simulated results show the accuracy of adaptation points can match the users preference from 78% to 93% by using proposed scheme. This solution provides not only a practical way in video adaptor design, but also an efficient scheme to achieve better subjective view.

Multiple-lifting scheme: memory-efficient VLSI implementation for line-based 2-D DWT

Chih-Chi Cheng; Chao-Tsung Huang; Po-Chih Tseng; Chia-Ho Pan; Liang-Gee Chen

In this paper, a memory-efficient VLSI implementation for line-based 2D DWT, named the multiple-lifting scheme, is proposed. Memory bandwidth and memory size dominate the cost of 2D DWT and are highly related to the total power and area of 2D DWT VLSI implementation, respectively. The proposed multiple-lifting scheme can reduce not only the average memory bandwidth but about 50% area of the line buffer in the 2D DWT module. The corresponding data scan, M-scan, is proposed to achieve the multiple-lifting scheme and eliminate the data buffer as well.

Application layer error correction scheme for video header protection on wireless network

Chia-Ho Pan; I-Hsien Lee; Sheng-Chieh Huang; Chih-Chi Cheng; Chung-Jr Lian; Liang-Gee Chen

In wireless video streaming application, video information may be corrupted by a noisy channel. By introducing error resilience and error concealment techniques, many researchers have tried to eliminate quality degradation of reconstructed picture in decoding a corrupted data. On the contrary, there are relatively fewer works discussing the ways to diminish the corruption. Hence, system designers need to use different methods to restrict the error cause by channel within a tolerable extent. In other words, the system will be difficult to be implemented in practical design. In this paper, we propose a way to protect the video header information in application layer without modifying standardized syntax. Beside, we also consider channel condition of wireless transmission and propose a way to reduce redundant bits used in channel coding. By doing this, the bitstream can be simply transmitted over practical wireless network and the reconstructed picture quality outperforms the original one.

Chia-Ho Pan; Sheng-Chieh Huang; I-Hsien Lee; Chung-Jr Lian; Liang-Gee Chen

Video transmission over a heterogeneous network suffers a condition that it has required to satisfy many different constraints because of the variety limitations of client equipments and preferences of each user. In this condition, the video stream should have the flexibility feature. Scalable video coding is one of the solutions to serve this condition. In order to provide a better flexibility on scalability feature, more than one combination with video spatial size, temporal frame rate, and visual quality resolution are utilized. It is difficult to adapt the appropriate relation between the various combinations and user preference. In this paper, we propose an objectivity-derived algorithm with soft decision scheme for serving scalable video adaptation. This method can be used in existing equipments without much computation overhead. This useful and simple solution is not only a practical way in scalable video adaptation design, but also an efficient scheme of achieving subjective satisfaction.
